I've never had this situation before. An item has come up which I've been on the lookout for for a very long time. It's (apparently) complete, it's (apparently) in good condition and it's genuinely hard to come by - almost actually "rare".

Fine, you say, go for it! And I will, but it has only 2 days to go and no one else has touched it - not so much as a nibble.

This makes me very nervous, what am I missing? Can it be that nobody else has found it because of the description? I doubt that - after all, I found it.

The starting price is, in my view, reasonable. The seller has a 98.something rating - not great but not bad. Paypal's accepted.

I've put in a bid to prevent it being pulled and my snipe is set. If you have a moment, check out 5916858028 and tell me what you think.

I'd guess you have a good chance at winning. Over the last month, they have about a 30% sell rate. Of the auctions that sold, there were only 1 or 2 bids on each. I would not have bid early ... but that's just me.

From feedback: If you win and get the item in the mail, then all should be good. I saw no complaints about missing parts, broken, or not as advertised. Their bigest problem is items sometimes don't arrive for over a month, and maybe never. (we don't know about the never) May not be very good at answering email after auction end.

Good Luck. Smile
By the way... bidding early doesn't stop the seller from canceling your bid and ending the auction. In fact some sellers are more likely to do that with only one bid. (don't think that will happen here though)

Think about it... if there are no bids, item does not sell and they can relist. If there are bids, it may sell at a low price, which may not be enough money for them.

The only time I might (and I usually don't) bid early is to get rid of a Buy It Now. If the opening price is very close to the BIN, I'll go ahead and use the BIN option and take the sure win.

Yes, I see your point Puppy, I hadn't thought it through as deeply as that. However, maybe no harm done, as you say.

One and a half days to go and still no other bids!

Mrs. M., I'll pay by Paypal direct from my debit card and if it doesn't arrive, chase it up through my credit union. I did that for two items from Portugal earlier this year which never arrived and got full refunds that way. Paypal got a bit shirty about it, claiming they could penalise me for not going through them.

As I see it they could only have recouped money from the (suspended) sellers Paypal account and there mightn't be anything in it. I doubt they could have charged the sellers card for the refund.

Why doesn't Paypal like you to go through your own credit organisation? Does it make them look bad? As far as I'm concerned, it's my right whether they like it or not - it's my money.

Maybe you should still worry a tiny bit. Sellers do know about snipers and it COULD sell for their minimum. Doesn't cost the seller anything more to still cancel a couple hours early and relist. I'm sure it happens both ways, but not that many auctions are canceled. I still think the odds are with the sniper that does not bid early.
6 hours to go and there's finally another bid, I'm almost relieved.

It's up to AS now, I'm going to bed.

I just had an auction pulled, I wouldn't have won it but my snipe went off OK. How can they pull an auction after all the bids are in??? Obviously weren't getting enough for it but why didn't they start higher if that's the reason.

It's no great loss and I certainly won't bid on it when it reappears but I think it's immoral - you pays yer money and you takes yer chances!

Hi folks;

No, I didn't win it - rats! Someone was prepared to pay more than the £50 I put up, never mind.

I've been off the air for a few days sulking of course.
