Hi Helene,
If you are placing a bid on ebay as well as AS (Auction Sniper) that are exactly the same, there are NO advantages. If AS places your bid and you win - you will get charged for that snipe.

IF (and many will talk you out of it) you wish to place an Ebay Bid as well as an AS Snipe - you should make your ebay proxy a low ball bid and your Snipe your true MAX you are willing to pay for the item.

Now - why are you thinking of placing a ebay proxy as well as a snipe? You risk getting involved in a bid war if you proxy bid on ebay, you also risk another nibbler running up the price of the auction.

MOST will say, place the MAXIMUM you are willing to pay on AS and forget about it. Make sure you make your amount odd too, like $20.27 instead of $20 and it may be the difference between winning and losing.

Good Luck and Hope to see you around some more Smile

Yesterday I did exactly that. There was a Grundig Yacht Boy* radio from the 70's that my neighbour wanted and there were no bids at all. As this was standing at 8 Euros (normal Ebay price is around 45 Euros) I really didn't want them to decide to cancel the auction and forget the whole thing. (You would be a bit discouraged if nobody had even placed a bid for a miserable 8.99 euros in 7 days!)

So I bid 10 Euros and placed my true bid for 45 Euros with Auction Sniper. As usual, everybody else piled in around my starting bid of 10 Euros and thought "my what a bargain!" I won it for 21.35 Euros as all the other snipers assumed I'd "shot my bolt", so I got a bargain in my terms! Never follow the herd - the art of sniping is don't show your hand, but if you have to (in this case for other reasons)then bid just a fraction above the lowest possible sum.

* Why this addiction to Yacht Boys? Well I bought one very cheaply at a local auction a couple of month's ago, cleaned it up and replaced our modern tranny with this rather old fashioned object. Since then I have become a UK centre for old Yacht Boys. People come in and say "thats a wonderful looking radio" and then I switch it on.
Result - 5 orders from neighbours and friends. Should I take this up seriously and make it my career?

The meaning of anal is:

Of or related to the anus

(psychoanalysis) a stage in psychosexual development when the child's interest is concentrated on the anal region; fixation at this stage is said to result in orderliness, meanness, stubbornness, compulsiveness, etc.

Thank you for a wonderful welcome into the A S
family. Not only were you informative, but
entertaining. Since the item I want to bid on
has already been bid quite high, I think I will
only bid through AS instead of a low bid with
Ebay and a maximum bid with AS. Does this sound
logical? Even though I have won several items
through AS, they were not very important. This
item is one I really am anxious to acquire so I
want to strategize...something I am not used to
doing.
First, to the Forum.
Personally, I have always had my bid placed by A/S. I would place the bid with A/S making sure you bid the max your willing to pay. Also bid an odd number ($27.42 instead of $27.00). If you place a bid at ebay your alerting the other bidders and may be adding to a bidding war. Good luck and let us know if you win.

Now, I have to say that I was being ironic. I thought the Ozzies would understand that... It was a play on words (Buoy vs boy) rather than a pedantic correction. In fact, 'boy' is correct in this context 'cos a radio isn't a boat. Hang on, is a boat a yacht or is a yacht a boat? And what a strange name for a radio?! Wink

BTW - last night, after 1 year of waiting, my dream item came to fruition. Last time I saw one of these things (let's call it a widget holder for argument's sake) was over a year ago and it sold for $115. So I sniped for $125 (to allow for inflation) and got it for...

...$36! No bidding war, no hassle! Hooray for me! Smile

1. No more on this subject! To an onlooker, it has now taken on a slightly "astringent" tone!

Mrs M will doubtless roar up in one of her white AS Toyota Landcruisers in a minute, so I'll leave her to have the last word!

2. To Helen who started this all, Good Luck!

Remember the motto "Snipers bid the most they can afford" Its our mantra. Even if it is really rare and has never appeared before, never pay more than you think its worth. A 1939 rare book I really wanted went for £32 a month ago. Far, far more than it was worth to me, even if the market place thought otherwise.

Look what I got last week! >>1939 Minitography & Cinetography<<

That's the second defining thing about all snipers - we are hunter/trackers! Patience and lying in wait are absolutely essential skills.
