What would happen if one placed a bid with Ebay
and the same maximum bid with AS? Would chances
of winning be greater, assuming there are no
higher bids? Would Ebay's bid take precedence over AS?

If you are placing a bid on ebay as well as AS (Auction Sniper) that are exactly the same, there are NO advantages. If AS places your bid and you win - you will get charged for that snipe.
IF (and many will talk you out of it) you wish to place an Ebay Bid as well as an AS Snipe - you should make your ebay proxy a low ball bid and your Snipe your true MAX you are willing to pay for the item.
Now - why are you thinking of placing a ebay proxy as well as a snipe? You risk getting involved in a bid war if you proxy bid on ebay, you also risk another nibbler running up the price of the auction.
MOST will say, place the MAXIMUM you are willing to pay on AS and forget about it. Make sure you make your amount odd too, like $20.27 instead of $20 and it may be the difference between winning and losing.

Yesterday I did exactly that. There was a Grundig Yacht Boy* radio from the 70's that my neighbour wanted and there were no bids at all. As this was standing at 8 Euros (normal Ebay price is around 45 Euros) I really didn't want them to decide to cancel the auction and forget the whole thing. (You would be a bit discouraged if nobody had even placed a bid for a miserable 8.99 euros in 7 days!)
So I bid 10 Euros and placed my true bid for 45 Euros with Auction Sniper. As usual, everybody else piled in around my starting bid of 10 Euros and thought "my what a bargain!" I won it for 21.35 Euros as all the other snipers assumed I'd "shot my bolt", so I got a bargain in my terms! Never follow the herd - the art of sniping is don't show your hand, but if you have to (in this case for other reasons)then bid just a fraction above the lowest possible sum.

* Why this addiction to Yacht Boys? Well I bought one very cheaply at a local auction a couple of month's ago, cleaned it up and replaced our modern tranny with this rather old fashioned object. Since then I have become a UK centre for old Yacht Boys. People come in and say "thats a wonderful looking radio" and then I switch it on.
Result - 5 orders from neighbours and friends. Should I take this up seriously and make it my career?
Surely it should be buoy if it's on a yacht?

Now, I have to say that I was being ironic. I thought the Ozzies would understand that... It was a play on words (Buoy vs boy) rather than a pedantic correction. In fact, 'boy' is correct in this context 'cos a radio isn't a boat. Hang on, is a boat a yacht or is a yacht a boat? And what a strange name for a radio?!

I was, of course referring to the UN's fleet!
The suggestion was that you would arrive wearing the AS flag and split up the warring participants!
As to cars, I have never owned a Japanese one (blind prejudice!) and tend to buy things ten years old because they are cheap and nobody will steal them!
