Just a lot of talk, nothing substantive. This is a long way from becoming anything, as it is just discussion, rather than legislation. Such an arrangement would also be unlikely to survive any federal court challenge. This is not congressional action; it is merely voluntary discussions by (not all) state legislatures.

I think the Cubs will win the World Series before anything comes of this.
What a hoot!

I used to live in Connecticut. At one time they had a sales tax on items not normally taxed, for example clothing over $50.

In the state tax forms, they included a form where you were to document everything taxable you purchased out-of-state, and pay Connecticut the tax they didn't get because you bought it out-of-state.

I'm willing to bet the cost of creating, printing, and including that form in the tax package FAR EXCEEDED the amount of money they got in return.
While it may be simpler to dismiss the threes years of work all these Legislators have put into this proposed Legislation - you can not dismiss the fact that each State, on this list at this link, has complied with the requirements or are in the process of doing that, and also the Governors have signed off on the changes to facilitate this change over to a national system and the new laws are in place.

This is why some States are now requiring licensing for the auction platforms and more will follow suit.

It is not a matter of "if" but exactly "when" and it is very close to fruition. The meeting on the 16th is an extremely important part of that process as they will consider ammendments from multiple States to reinforce their resoove.

States who are complying with requirements:

Ammendments being considered on April 16th

I most certainly can dismiss it and I do so. I have seen many of these types of discusions before, particularly from the National Conference of State Legislatures--a sad caricature of a wandering, aimless group. It is just talk and amounts to nothing.

Did you come here to participate in an AS forum discussion on AS/eBay, or simply to plug your own article? Maybe you should peddle it to a market journal or a news publication--or have they already turned it down?
Actually, I would like to see more people get invovled in this new Legislative effort. While three years ago - many were dismissing this.

Now, three years down the road and the bulk of the States with laws in place so this can be enacted - it no longer is a pipe dream and only those left fool hardy to believe that putting their heads in the sand and pretend that "its just gonna go away" believe in that myth.

I do thank you for the suggestion on article submission - but I had not done that, nor considered it.

Discussion is always encouraged on forums and I thank you for participating.

Reading this rather ungracious reply, I thought to myself, this really is the unacceptable face of AS message boards. I think the lady has a valid point (after all most Governments step in and close any tax loophole that can be found) and was entitled to draw the attention of this particular informed audience to a pending danger.

You may well be right Chatter that it is a lot of hot air, but don't say later that you wern't warned! That's why we have a group of people in the UK known as "Metric Martyrs" persecuted for their steadfast defence of lbs & ozs.

After a prolonged absence (divorce - my daughters, not mine!) I was re-reading the correspondence before putting in my ha'penny worth and thought, thats not just a "put downer, that's downright rude!"

Go on Chatter, send her an apology!
The article was a relentlessly self-serving plug for someone who apparently could not find an audience elsewhere. The links to her name in the "article" simply lead one to her company's website, where one is subjected to a sales pitch. It is just another promotional piece, disguised as a news item. I do not apologize for rejecting advertisements in this forum.

The fact that the correspondent disappeared as quickly as she arrived is further evidence that she has gone to spread her pitch elsewhere.
Chatter

I would normally agree with you about rank commercialism. That's why I try never to advertise my books on "Weaning Vultures" or "Photographing Pylons" on AS!*

However, is not this whole Message Board a huge advertisement for ebay? After all is not AS a purely parasitic form of life?

Perhaps in this case, we should have welcomed her with a "Rival to ebay? Wonderful!"

As to her not appearing again, with a put down like that, even I would have disappeared for ever! (Shouldn't have said that - R2 will now give me the put down to end all put downs!)

Ah well, if we can't abuse a few innocents on this message board, where else could we have such fun!

Paul

Talking of innocents .....
* A joke Lexie, Mrs M!
Oh, I didnt disapear. I find that responding to bad behavior on forums only condones it. So, I chose not to respond.

Not only do I have a personal interest in the Streamlined Tax Act, I also have an interview set up this week with one of the participants at the Washington conferance last week plus an appointment with a local state representative to discuss Illinois and the Auction Act just passed which requires all Auction platforms, no matter their location, to license in Illinois if Illinois residents are buying or selling on that platform.

Thus, there is merit to my spreading the word. Even eBay is very concerned about this turn of events and has set up a page just to deal with
government regulations.

So, hear ye, hear ye. This is matter is not an
idle thought, it is well on the way to implementation. And it will affect you as other States are working on similar legislation. It means that the auction platforms will have to come up with about $10,000 per year to operate in all 52 States if this trend continues and it is, you, the user, that will pay ultimately as the cost will be passed on.
