I just got an email, supposedly from ebay, asking me to follow a link to verify my status as a customer. Sounded fishy to me, so I trashed it without following the link. Any thoughts?

My thought is you were correct! You can send things like that to spoof@ebay.com also. 
Neither PayPal nor any other reputable business sends e-mails asking customers to follow links and provide information such as that. 
LOL - you can take these spoofs things a little far though.
I kept getting an email requesting me to confirm my registrations details as I had provided incorrect ones - I sent it to spoof@ebay.com and replied to the email basically telling them I wasnt completing the stupid form because my details were true and correct blah blah blah...
As it turns out it was an actual ebay customer service person and not spoof

Just FYI...replying to these emails is generally a bad idea.
First of all, if it is a spammer, it lets them know that you exist and they will flood you with more spam.
Second, if it is automated, no human being will ever see your reply.
Third, if you suspect that there is a possibility that it is a legit email...just write to eBay (or whomever the sender was) and ask them about it. That way, since you are initiating the email, you know for sure who it is that you are communicating with.

I once got a spam email that appeared to be from ebay. (it wasn't) I reported it to ebay but I also did a little test. The email asked me to sign in so I could be entered in some type of drawing to win an SUV. I signed in with my ebay name but a phony password. Wouldn't you know, it took me to the next page no problem. If it had been ebay it would have said the password didn't match the user name. I immediately changed my ebay password (figuring someone out there in cyberland probably recorded my keystrokes). Ebay did respond to my email and said it was spam and thanked me for reporting it.
