Hi,
I've recently had two experiences using Auction Sniper where my bid (lower than final) has been displayed on ebay earlier than the final bid.
The latest is that my maximum bid was $356 and ebay showed it received at 15:45:59. The high bid of $361 (the exact overbid needed to win) is shown timed at 15:45:30 - nearly half a minute before mine. The bid below was from a different bidder at $320.
My question is a) why was my bid shown at all if a higher bid had been received 29 seconds earlier and b) is it really a coincidence that the higher bidder is the exact $5 needed to beat my bid? In other words is there a smarter system out there that is seeing my Auction Sniper bid before it is placed?
Regards

Hi Hendo,

The answer to your last question is, “No”. Everything you described are the results of ebay’s proxy bidding system and ebay's bidding increments. If you plan to bid on ebay, you really should read up on proxy bidding, and on ebay’s bidding increments.

Proxy bidding – even has a “Test bid”:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/proxy-bidding.html

Proxy bidding from AS’ FAQs:

For info about increments, enter “increments” on ebay’s “Search help” on the “Help” page.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the reply. I've read the links and think I understand what they mean. I'm still unclear why the higher bid is shown as being received earlier than mine. Here is the bid list: I'm zabalos.

team2ski ( 62 ) AU $361.00 23-Jul-06 15:45:30 AEST
zabalos ( 37 ) AU $356.00 23-Jul-06 15:45:59 AEST
22222222897654 ( 5 )AU $320.00 23-Jul-06 14:20:00 AEST
team2ski ( 62 ) AU $300.00 21-Jul-06 09:34:48 AEST

Does it look like team2ski is using some other sniper? I'f he'd bid before me I would have expected to see a bid from him appearing later than 222etc but before me. I'm still confused.

No, that's right. I'm pretty sure if you had checked to see whom was the high bidder at the time of your bid, it would have said team2ski at $325 -- the next bid increment up from 22222222897654's $320. The reason it doesn't show that now is because it would wrongly imply that $325 was team2ski's max bid at 15:45:30, when in fact it was at least $361, and quite possibly more (we'll never know, because it just needed to bid one $5 bid increment higher than your $356)
