so, if somebody could explain in PLAIN words how somebody could outbid me with a lower bid, and, more important, how to avoid this in future, it would be more than appreciated. the weird part being that in this case, increment was at 0.50 EURO.

Bidding odd amounts often helps. Instead of $75.00, bid 76.97, for instance. The main thing is to bid the most you want to pay. If you get outbid, you will know the other bidder bid too much..and normally, just be patient, other will go up for auction!
