Newbie who wants to understand how AS works

Could you answer a hypothetical question for me please? I want to bid on something that has an existing bid of $30 by a bidder who has a maximum bid of $33. My snipe has a max bid of $40. Is my final price going to be $34 or $40? In other words, is there some back and forth bidding going on in the final seconds, or does AS go right to my max bid?

AS places your bid (max bid and only bid), then ebay's proxy software does the rest.

Perhaps if you will think of your snipe as a proxy bid, that will help. Actually, it is a proxy bid sent to Ebay at the last possible moment and bid one time for the amount you need to win over the highest bidder. Of course, that is if your snipe is high enough to bid over him.

Assuming there are other bidders who may come in at the last minute, I would make my max bid $41 rather than $40. Many people tend to bid in round numbers and if there's a preceding bid for $40 you'll lose out.
