I am new to snipping and to this web site and forum. I lost a very good item on eBay Sunday evening due to a sniper (I assume) because the bid came in at 17:59:51 PST when the auction ended at 18:00:00 PST. As you can see I had less the .49 seconds to respond to an over bid. YES I understand it is not the last bid but the highest bid that wins. But like all of us on eBay I wanted to keep the price low as possible yet win.

I have entered a snip for an item I REALLY WANT that ends late this evening. (Around 2:30 PM EST, 23:30:35 PST) I won't be awake for the end of this auction.

I have read nearly 50% of the Forum posts as research and gone to FAQ to follow-up. Nothing annul on my part as you can see. ;-)

I have trust issues (among other things) LOL. I have entered my eBay name and password with AS. I got a listing of all the items I am watching on eBay. So AS has my correct eBay userID and password. I have a lead time of 12 seconds. I understand that this is a good time to enter as a lead time from my reading and research.

I want to feel confident that I can go to sleep this evening knowing that my bid will be placed by AS 12 seconds before the end of the auction. I have placed a ridicules amount as my high bid to try to insure that I win the item. My question is: Can I trust AS to enter my bid 12 seconds before the end of the auction? Is 12 seconds enough time or would the veterans in this forum suggest more lead time (15 seconds, 20 seconds?).

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome aboard. I have always used 7 seconds and the only snipes I have ever had problems with are when eBay did some password changes (a few thousand snipes over 3 years). If the auction ends at 2:30 exact then the 12 seconds should be fine, I like 7 seconds as slips in and no one who is trying to manually snipe has time to respond.

I get emails about twice a month from buyers who are ticked off that I got in there at the last minute and "stole" an item.

I have faith and good history with AS.

A-
I win the auction. AS entered the bid exactly 12 sec. before the end. Another person entered a bid 7 seconds before the auction end. (Was it a sniper?). My late father was a doctor in WWII, Pacific campaign. My twin and I are Putting together in a frame all this metals, ranks, etc, plus a picture of him. We thought the medical kit would be a nice addition.

Congratulations. Welcome to sniping. When you really want to buy something that is pretty common, learn to use the bid group folders. You just keep tossing the gizmos into the folder with the top price your want to pay. Each person has their own way of seting their price (eg:Take the retail price, subtract the cost of shipping, then devide that by 1/2 and work around that as a max bid price.)
You will lose a lot of auctions, but sooner or later you will win at your price and then you really rejoice. Again, WELCOME and Good Sniping.
