On reading this article I realised I'd been somewhat missing the obvious point of ebay: that you need to decide in your own mind what is the absolute maximum that you're prepared to pay, and submit that as your bid, regardless of how low the current price is. And bid as late as possible. From these forums it seems that I wasn't alone in not grasping those rules.
