Do I need to enter a bid on ebay myself first and then log into AS and enter my maximum or does AS do the bidding for me from the start?

There isn't a "start", only an "end". AS bids only once, which is the amount you enter as your max bid, and places that bid towards the end (last few seconds) of the auction.
