It is because your bid was not an increment higher, so it could not e placed to win.

Current Price Bid Increment

£0.01 - £1.00 £0.05
£1.01 - £5.00 £0.20
£5.01 - £15.00 £0.50
£15.01 - £60.00 £1.00
£60.01 - £150.00 £2.00
£150.01 - £300.00 £5.00
£300.01 - £600.00 £10.00
£600.01 - £1,500.00 £20.00
£1,500.01 - £3,000.00 £50.00
and up £100.00
A few people have been fooled by that one - beacuse you don't see the bid happen (AS does it for you!) you don't see the eBay message telling you what your next bid's minimum amount can be. Obviously AS cannot bid higher than the max you've specified so no bid gets placed even though your max might be a few pence/cents higher than the auction amount.

If you goto to eBay's help you can read up on bid increments and proxy bidding...
