multi snipes

Hi all, am new to this so would like some help. What happens if more than 1 sniper is interested in a piece? Does it go by the time of snipe, the amount bid, or the time you place the snipe, or any combination of these. I can't believe it worked for me, even tho' i know others were busy sniping!
any advice welcome!
