Although I don't agree with some of Upton Sinclair's political views, I'm enjoying "Dragon's Teeth". Good stuff. I've read about two/thirds of it.

I'm thinking about reading "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" next, but may change my mind.

I have read The Winds of War. BTW, before I forget to tell you, I have arranged a sitter for two weeks starting Friday PM. I have some business to attend to and didn't want anyone to think I left the earth! When I return, I will be back on driving you all bonkers! You have found a cool site for spooky animations.

Bonkers, Mrs. M.?? It's been a pretty crazy day so far. Somebody at work decided he needed a cigarette this morning. He didn't have a cigarette lighter, so he tried lighting it using an electrical outlet. He got shocked. That ended with a trip to the doctor's because his heart started beating funny, but he'll be OK. I don't know if he ever got the thing lit. Some people!!!
Anyway, Rick, it sounds like you're getting into some quality reading. I'll agree with you that a lot of the classics are pretty good reading. But lately all I've had time for is textbooks.

Sad thing is, they push an awful lot of the 'classics' on teenagers in high school and I think it turns many of them away from reading.

Although I love to read, and was an english major in university, even I hated most of the required reading in high school. It is kind of neat to go back and reread them as an adult and see which ones were just hard to read at the time OR truly terrible works!

Exactly, Warriornun! Because someone says something is great, doesn't necessarily make it so. It is only great if it is great reading to you! I have had to read some very boring "great" nonsense in my lifetime.

I think you're right, Mrs. M. and Warrior Nun. Last year I reread "Of Mice and Men" and couldn't see what is supposed to be so wonderful about it. Lost Horizon is really good, and if you can get a decent translation, "The Illiad" and "The Odyssey" aren't bad. Maybe it'd be best to quit before Rick gets any more ideas of what to read. Then he'd stay away even more.
Last week I bought a copy of the movie "Hamlet" starring Mel Gibson. (Well, that doesn't count as a book, but....) And a copy of the movie "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" (the newer one starring Kevin Costner), too. It's getting hard to find a really good movie without a lot of shooting, foul language, or dumb stuff that passes as humor so I checked the classics section. Some day when life mellows out, maybe I'll get to watch them.

Now, movies are a whole new ball of wax! Pray tell me why they have to see how much filth they can utter in less than 3 hours in order to sell a movie? I suppose that is why so many movies today, along with the "stars" come and go with little notice. I was fortunate to grow up during the era of great musicals and wonderful drama, all done in good taste. Like reading a good book, you were there, if only for the moment.

You said it, Mrs. M.! It's soooo hard to find movies that are just plain good stories with good acting. That's why I've started going to the classics. There's a little bit of violence in some of them, but not like a lot of the ones they make now.

Ford, my all time favorite is Grapes of Wrath. It is a black and white. I first read it and then saw the movie mnay years ago. It is in my collection, now on DVD, and I enjoy it as much today as I did when I first saw it. Great acting, great screen play, zero obsenity. I've always loved anything I can feel drawn into, be it a movie or book.

I've seen that one, Mrs. M. Shirley Temple did some good movies, too, and last year they had "The Charge of the Light Brigade" with Errol Flynn on TV. That was good.

I have seen many of his. I'm not a Shirley Temple fan. Cute, but I like a little deeper things. I loved "Fiddler on the Roof", "Singing in the Rain", "Somewhere in Time"...and on and on ! LOL!

Fiddler on the Roof was great. There are a few good ones coming out now, but it seems like a lot of them get drowned out in a sea of Hollywood hype. Have you seen the Back to the Future series (I, II, and III) with Michael J. Fox? That's good comedy. And the Star Wars series was great. The other week I saw "Truly, Madly, Deeply." That was really good. There is some good stuff out there, but sometimes it sure does seem hard to find. I'd like to find more of Errol Flynn's movies, too.

WarriorNun - I agree with you comments about required reading. It's such a turn off. It doesn't seem like many people read these books outside of school. When I talk about what I'm reading, the person will usually say that they read the book when they were in high school or college. They make the book sound like a destination and not a journey. If you haven't read a book in several years, then you haven't really read it.

Mrs. M - HI. GONE FOR TWO WEEKS? Going to be very quiet in your absence. I said it once, and I'll say it again - "You can't be replaced. The forum goes into the crapper when you're gone."

Oh, I surely hope not Rick. I am going to be very busy, but if I am somewhere where it is available I will try to pop in.....Yes, you are right about reading, Rick. I love to read. It is my "great escape".

The BB auction made me laugh - as an ex-avid BB collector I can see both sides of this: that terrible craving to get those rare ones and the underlying realisation that they are just little furry animal dolls with very little actual use...

If those rarer ones are genuine, they're worth a fortune.

The mating we have been waiting for happened last night at about 10pm in the dark - but that's another story......

Good morning- evening everyone! It is so nice and cool here this Am. I think they said 54, but alas, it will be in the mid 80s by 2pm.

Our neighbor and his 13 year old son and a doctor friend are lost at sea. They will be doing a massive search all the way to Cuba today. It will be the last attempt. So sad.

Yes, Ford, it is really tragic. They searched today, following a boat that was set adrift to follow the trail. Nothing yet, but I heard they are hopeful because there is still nothing from the boat adrift. They are even talking of the possibility of them being Cuban captives.
