Missed a snipe........why?

The only thing I would have done in this case is probably bid his opening bid so he maybe would not close the auction, then sniped. He closed early because he didn't want to sell the jewelry that cheap, I am sure.

FYI

If the auction had remained open, and someone else had bid, your $220 snipe would have been rejected as invalid. The next bid increment above $219 (opening bid) is $221.50

I would have used the Buy it Now for only $6 more than the opening bid.

Puppy.........you are so right! And I know better. I am used to sniping less costly items with lower bidding increments But that still doesn't explain why AS informed me that the auction "ENDED EARLY"

One final comment: I emailed the seller and explained that I didn't get my bid in on time and asked if he would consider selling the item for $225. Have I breached Ebay rules ? And if he does sell the item to me, has he breached Ebay rules ? Will we both go to prison if this transaction is consumated off of Ebay ? Ed.

It is against eBay rules, cuz they want their cut.

You won't go to prison, as it is not against the law. You won't have the "protection" of being able to leave feedback if you get a raw deal though, or have the other protection buying through eBay gives you.

p.s. Look at the auction. It was cancelled by the seller. That's why it ended early!

The seller just sent me this exact email: "Hi, I had to end this aucion early because I found a dent in the bracelet and cannot sell it."

I believe its only against the rules for the seller to contact the buyer, and not the other way around.

Besides, all Ebay can do is kick you off. It would be too much trouble for litigation on their behalf.

It's good to see that you are now satisfied regardless.

     

I would not be too concerned. It is done probably hundreds of times a day. I doubt that there are many of us here that have not bought something off Ebay in that situation a time or two. If you are both bothered about it, he can list it with a BIN only and you can hit it asap. Also, yes I was wrong, probably about him ending so it would not sell so cheap, but he saved some fees if it didn't sell and can relist.
