This was truly an interesting loss for me. I had chosen a 5 second snipe on a lot of VHS tapes that was a really good deal. The bidding stopped at $31.00 and didn't move. I figured someone had proxy bid up to what they wanted to pay so I bid on what I was willing to pay, which was $66.50. I refreshed the auctionsniper at each passing second and watched the bid go up to $36, but by the end someone out of the blue had proxy outbid me by 1.00. Was it possible that after my bid was placed by auction sniper that they saw it and had time to outbid me? It was such a good deal, I'm kind of bummed. I want to try to avoid this in the future. What should I try, less lead time???

It's possible that someone saw your bid entered, but unless the bidding was already at a level which would have shown your max bid of $66.50, which it wasn't, there would be no way a sniper could know exactly how high above the standing high bid of $36 your bid was. It appears to me that you just ran into another sniper who was willing to pay at least $67.50 for the tapes. It happens sometimes. At least you gave it your best shot and whoever won the tapes had to pay more than you were willing to pay.

Remember, it's not who gets in the last bid, it's who bids the highest. Your technique will win for you a lot more often than someone will beat you.

Yes, the items would have been worth at least $106 brand new, since they were used and the title was not in the mainstream search, I figured there wouldn't be as many bidders and I had a better chance of getting it for less than that. Plus the seller, not knowing what he had, was offering a free tape if the bidding went over ten dollars. It was a one time sale. And I definitely should have gone higher. Oh well, live and learn.
