I've done a little test over the past few auctions I've won with Auction Sniper (I don't EVER bid without AS). I've watched the auction page towards the end, like the last minute, and clicked the refresh button constantly. With a cable modem and a G5 I find that a ten second lead time under normal conditions allows me to see one refreshed page before the auction ends and with me as the current winner. It's usually at about five seconds remaining. Could someone get in a manual bid in that amount of time? I suppose, but there's no WAY I could do it. Also, I've noticed that a ten second lead time gets the bid in at 13 to 14 seconds before the close of the auction at a non-rush hour. Sure, some Windows machines might be a hair faster, but think about all the things a manual bid requires.

This might sound a little psycho but lonnng ago, wayyy before I knew about AuctionSniper...if there was an item that I really wanted, and it was being hotly contested, I would have a bid already typed in, with my mouse-arrow hovering over the submit button, and if I suddenly got "new mail" right before auction's close, I would just click on submit. That way, if the email was warning me that I had been outbid, I had my counterbid in before the auction closed.

So, yes, under normal circumstances, it takes a lot to put in a bid...but not if you're ready! Wink

Oh yeah, the good old manual snipe... those were the days, I tell ya.

Bring up the item on your browser, then open a second window with the same item. Use that second window to enter all your proxy bid information, all but the very last "Enter" keystroke. Then keep refreshing the first window until there's about 40-50 seconds left in the auction... much more than that, and your computer/Net connection might not have enough time to place your bid, especially on dialup.

It can work pretty well, if you really don't have anything better to do than sit around and watch auctions on the computer.

But eventually, of course, it was time to get some science and come over to AS Big Grin
