Hi Janet... and WELCOME to the forum.

is 2-3 seconds still time enough to snipe?
Yes, USUALLY. The key word there is 'usually'. Most, from what I've seen use 7 or 8 seconds. Auctions ending on exact quarter hours 12-18, and during very busy times as much as 30 seconds like on Sunday evenings on quarter hours.

AS does attempt to automatically increase your lead time when eBay is very busy, but sometimes bids STILL don't get through. Better to make sure your bid gets placed early than not get placed at all.

Remember, it's not the number of seconds, it's the amount that's more important. A few seconds one way or the other makes little difference because those bidding that late usually have their amounts decided well in advance. Just because a bid comes in after yours does not mean they bid in response to your bid.

Did that help?

Regarding short lead times.

I think this is more of an issue when someone starts sniping (or at least when they move from manual sniping to automated sniping). The idea of a computer placing the snipe has an appeal of using a 2 or 3 second snipe. That's how I started.

Try doing a test to see how long it takes to place a manual retaliatory snipe (one that is in response to someone else sniping).
#1) Open up a window that allows you to monitor the bids for an auction.
#2) Open another window where you have signed-in/on to ebay (have the bid page displayed - you don't want to waste time waiting for that to come up).
#3) Keep refreshing #1.
#4) Pretend like someone sniped "your" auction.
#5) Start a stop watch (#4 and #5 are reversible).
#6) GET YOUR CURSOR BACK ON #2'S WINDOW!
#7) CLICK ON #2'S WINDOW!
#8) THE CLOCK IS TICKING - DECIDE HOW MUCH MORE YOU ARE WILLING TO SPEND!
#9) THE CLOCK IS TICKING!
#10) WITH SWEATY PALMS & HEART RACING, TRY TO KEY IN THE AMOUNT OF YOUR INCREASED BID!
#11) HURRY!       H-U-R-R-R-R-Y!       WHERE IS THAT "PLACE BID" ICON?
#12) PUT YOUR CURSOR ON THE ICON.
#13) CLICK IT.
#14) WAIT A COUPLE OF SECONDS (MORE IF SUNDAY NIGHT) TO GET YOUR BID PLACED.
#15) YOU ARE STILL NOT HIGH BIDDER!
#16) REPEAT # 8 THRU #16 AS MANY TIMES AS YOU CAN!
#17) SUFFER A MILD STROKE - YOUR LAST #16 WASN'T FAST ENOUGH.

It's not how short the snipe is, but how big it is.

Yes, I do. Would you like to pet it? My gerbil is getting excited. Down gerbil. Nice gerbil. Good gerbil. Best to wear gloves when handling a gerbil - practicing safe gerbil.

Watching a movie rated "Brief Sexuality". Does that me a quickie; or Wham, Bam (no thank you ma'am).

Consider the 1st non-native Americans - Puritans (Salem Witch-burnings). Consider the 1st non-native Aussies - Criminals. I'd opt for the later when it comes to sexuality.

Interesting the course this topic has taken. Here's a quick recap/interpretation (for those that want the Cliffs Notes):

- Lead time <5 seconds.

- Snipe hunting.

- Submarine races.

- Gerbils.

- "Brief sexuality."

- The difference between TV in the U.S. and Australia.

- Comparing the colonization of the Americas with Australia.

- Religion.

- Quality of TV programming in the States.

(and all in only 25 replies!)

[STANDARD DISCLAIMER] This is not a commentary but merely an observation.

Janet, Hope you approve.

I don't think any topic is ever "*so* over", at least I hope not. I love to see where they go. That's why I recapped this topic, and that is why I post so much from the archives. My intent was to say, "Look how much fun we had with this" and hopefully more fun.

Oh, don't worry about the over-ness of it. It's not that big of a deal -- I love the wandering, too. It's just like a conversation around a dinner-table, though, where you have to wait your turn to make a comment, but by the time you can get a word in edgewise, everyone else has gone off in another direction. Most of the time the comment you would have made won't be missed. If it was important, you can post it anyway, and no one will mind going back.

Anyway, I'm not losing sleep over it!
