AS works 99% of the time with the lead time at 5 seconds I have mine set at 5 and I have never lsot a bid.

My lead time is set at 10 seconds and I don't lose even one percent of my bids because they're entered too late. The idea is to place a bid with so little time left that other bidders don't have a chance to put in another bid. Very few people are able to place a bid in less than 15 seconds.
If you want to make doubly sure your bid gets in on time, snipe it yourself at 15 seconds while you have an AS bid set at 5 seconds. The bids can be for the same amount. You *will* be charged a snipe even though you placed the winning bid manually, though. I know because that just happened to me.
