The item was at $156. I had a sniper bid for 259 for the last 5 seconds. 2 hours before the bid ended I was being informed I was outbid. BUT all that was posted for 2 hours was 156. I was being notified I was outbid by another auction sniper (?) obviously, because it was not posted until the end of the auction. That means someone would be informed if I was outbidding them before the bid was posted. Isn't that the correct conclusion? How do I keep from being outbid like that. I have had a terrible rash of it when I used to win. I am very very unhappy. I CHOSE AUCTION SNIPER TO AVOID A BIDDING WAR, now good ol' ebay has turned it into something to raise prices and their revenue......AM I WRONG? PLEASE TELL ME I AM wrong......

Where was that? On your My Snipes page?? Did you hit the *update prices* button.

There is no way that Ebay knew what you were going to bid as AS doesnt place the bid until you time you tell it to.

AS also doesnt check your bid against any other snipers it had on board. It just programs your snipe to go through and sends it.

Thats very weird.

I have been using AS for months now and have fair amount of snipes under my belt...the only way you will get and "outbid" notice is if AS checks ebay and your proposed bid was lower than the current price.

No offense meant here Smile but are you sure you didnt type in something funky when you entered the snipe? like put the decimal point in wrong?

This one will take a little figuring I think.

BUT!! I assure you ...there's absolutely no funny business going on

You have not read all the replies. I do not use update prices as one can only update once every 5 minutes. I was using a separate windows and refreshing it, and yet with my bid at 259 I got notice I was outbid for an unposted on ebay bid more than 2 hours before the bid closed.
I WAS NOT USING A AS WINDOW

This was an AS outbid email, not an Ebay outbid email? correct?

Can you post the email with the date/time stamp and the bid history for the item? for example:

I was notified 2 hours before that I was outbid. I have the email. AS said my bid was 119 and outbid. I checked immediately at AS and my bid for 5 seconds was 259.99, the price at that time was 166.....I kept looking and refreshing and refreshing, and I gave up until the end of the auction, and I had been outbid by a tiny amount. I am absolutely baffled.

I could be wrong, but I am 95% sure I am NOT.

The following table has been reorganized and sorted into date order. First
bid placed is line #1. That should make it easier to follow the auction.
Two additional columns have been claculated and added. They are the current
bid and high bidder, as displayed on eBay after each bid is placed. v2.1.03
* = Winning bid. (may be less than actual maximum entered.)

Okay, I have been wrong about a few of my ideas. It was not 2 hours, it was 26 minutes.

I had upped bids in the day.

I thought that 259.99 bid had been in all day, but maybe it wasn't. That is the only explanation.

I thought I was at 259.99 when I got the outbid notice. It crossed in the mail, and I then came up with paranoid fantasies to justify my loss.
IF SO PASS the THORAZINE.....
he who runs lives to bid another day.....

That is the best I can come up with. I have been tired and very stressed, and I wanted that rug.......
[QUOTE] Where did the 119 come from? I was at 259.99 when I went and checked QUOTE]

My guess on the email is that you had the snipe set at 119 at some point - AS does it's outbid checks on a scheduled basis, it's not constantly checking in realtime. So probably you changed it to 259.99 between the time it processed the outbid checks and the time that you opened the email.

Here's why you shouldn't be upset about the whole thing anyway... this was the series of events ->

* you scheduled a snipe at 259.99
* patom789 outbid mothert a good 20 minutes before the auction closed with a maxbid of $264.99 or higher
* however, because ebay increments in proxy bids, at the time you would have seen patom's bid as $155.02 ($5 over mothert's bid)
* AS sent your snipe of 259.99 10sec before the auction closed
* immediately after receiving your snipe patom789's bid was automatically proxied up $5 over your bid to $264.99 (remember that patom's bid was probably higher that $264.99 anyway)

So, you lost the auction because you bid $259.99 and patom had previously submitted a higher bid. It was just a simple case of not bidding high enough Frown

mothert 150.02 15-Feb 14:56:13 152.52
patom789 264.99 15-Feb 17:39:46 159.16
oneseer 259.99 15-Feb 18:02:23 264.99

Good luck getting the next one! those persian rugs look nice. -sk

So, I need to ignore email. It can be inacurrate and untimely.

hmm... well yes and no. I would use the word outdated rather than inaccurate. It can be outdated simply because niether AS's outbid checks nor the email are realtime, but it will definitely warn you when you're not in the game anymore. So if you receive an outbid email and you want the item - if you haven't changed your snipe you'll need to if you want to win the auction.

Of course, it's never guaranteed that you'll win because while you may get the snipe in, it may not be high enough. Which is what happened in this case. -sk
I am very grateful for the help. I have a good memory on some things, so I was absolutely confused, since things could not be explained easily. I just went and raised all my auction sniper bids again. I don't use anything but AS, and hven't in some time. It's not worth it. I got outbid in what almost seemed a pattern...I am so grateful there was not some new wrinkle.
I am so tired of upgrades...
just when I get used to one thing, here comes a new and better way to do something....
Now I can sleep.....
