AS does NOT circumvent that rule. If your Argentine friend is truly bidding/sniping his/her MAX, they would have experienced the same outcome even if bidding manually.

Incidentally, in the LAST case maybe, maybe not on the win. After all, they have NO IDEA what the winning bidder's maximum proxy bid was. They might have been outbid even if the snipe bid were successfully placed.

I have to agree with Jabber on his observations. (even those not quoted here)

I used AS the other day. At one minute till auction end current price was $910. I was sure to win with a snipe of $1177.65!

Well, my bid wasn't even recorded (bid to low). Item sold for $1556.00

Now if that other bidder had not shown up, and my snipe was 'not in time', item would have sold for $910 which is much lower than my snipe, but either way I still would have lost.
