I'm going to try this on an auction that ends around 6:18pm PST (Pacific time). Would an 8 second wait be too short? I've read a few forum posts, but I'm still a little confused.. And what are the main peak times? Thanks.

If it is not on Sunday, 8 seconds should be fine. However if it is on Sunday, I personally would add 15 seconds to the snipe time. Sunday between 5:30 and 8 pm PST, I add 15 seconds. Any other time that an auction ends on the hour, half, or quarter, I add 10 seconds. Other than that, bid your max you want to pay and bid an odd amount such as 21.76 instead of 20.00, fo example. I have another question though.. If the highest bid is under my bid limit, can it place a bid lower than my limit? Or right at my limit?
Say the highest bid is $15. If I put my limit at $20, would it place the bid as $20? Or just a little above the $15?

AS bids once at your limit - it's as if you bid. Look up Proxy Bidding on eBay help.

The date is nothing to worry about. Just a quirk in the system the past few days. They are working on it.
If you will think of your snipe as a proxy bid, it will make it a little clearer. AS sends the 20.00 bid to Ebay at the last possible moment. Ebay bids one time, the amount needed of the snipe, to outbid the highest bidder.

I happened to come online with less than 3 minutes before the auction ended. My max bid on AS was too low to beat the current high bidder, so I bid last minute. I won(), but I'll have to try AS on the next one..
