I set up a snipe for an auction, and when I checked back after the auction closed, I was surprised to see that I lost to a bidder with a higher bid.

Here is the wrinkle -- it suggested his bid had been place about a day earlier. How could this be? The only bid that appeared on the item was his final, winning bid.

How could he make an initial bid that did not appear until the close of the auction, but carried a date of the day before?

Thanks!

Sounds to me like proxy bidding...when your snipe was placed, it wasn't high enough to surpase his maximum bid amount. Apparently, he put in a bid the day before for it, and when you went to outbid him, it wasn't a high enough numerical amount to go over the bid he put in for the item...at least that's the only thing I can think of as possible for this situation. Although from what you're saying, the bid didn't show up til the very end...so that does seem a bit strange...perhaps someone who is a bit more 'in the know' about eBay can answer this better than me. Isn't it true that if I were to place two bids at once on an item with zero bids and no reserve, then only the lower of the two bids would show? The higher bid would only show if it were needed to outbid a later bid by another bidder, right? Then you'd have a bid show up on the history when it was needed to beat a new bid, but it would have an earlier date and time. I believe that no matter how many bids one bidder places, ebay's proxy system only shows the bid(s) that are necessary to make that bidder the current high bidder on an item. I think I have an example of this on the bid history on an item I sold. I'll check it out but I think this is correct.
...it was a private auction, so the history only shows me the winning bid. Multiple bids by the same bidder seem to work as one bid, proxy-wise. With proxy bidding, Ebay only bids for you the amount needed to win. If you place a thousand bids, ebay will only use two if that wins the item for you. If it takes 875, it will show 875 bids for you. Isn't this correct?

The bidder who won this auction did have another earlier bid.

I still have no idea how he bid at the last minute, but it showed up with a date the day before...hmmmmmm????

It sounds like proxy bidding. His max. bid was higher than your snipe bid so he won. The previous date showed up because that's when he placed his proxy bid.
