Can someone please tell me how this happened? I've never seen anything like this. Ebay item 8181001833 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8181001833 I put in a snipe for up to $20. I never heard anything from Auction Sniper, like I usually do, if I need to increase my bid. The auction ended on 4-2-05 at 18:07:27. Auction Sniper bid for me at 18:07:15 for the $20 maximum. Somehow, someone named "Gunny" put in a bid on 4-2-05 at 17:14:30, but it must have never shown up on the bid list for that item. Otherwise, AS would have immediately emailed me and told me I needed to increase my bid. Instead, he beat me with a bid he put in some time prior to mine, but it apparently didn't "take effect" until after my bid! I've been on Ebay for awhile now--I don't understand how this happened. In looking at "Gunny's" record, I found another auction where the same thing happened to someone else. Can anyone please explain how this happened? I would be most grateful. I love AS and how it works, and up this point, have never had any problems. Thanks! Vivster58

Hey Viv,

Take a tour of the forum too - you'll see that everyone generally reckons that you should never bid round figures as, in a proxy bidding situation, adding a few cents/pence might tip the balance your way (that'll make more sense when you've read up on proxy bidding). So bid 20.03 and not 20.00 (although that wouldn't have helped here as the winner bid even more!)

In this case the winner had bid his max of, at least, 20.50 and walked away, leaving proxy bidding to do the rest. So when your bid of 20.00 rocked up, ebay's proxy bidding took over and you were outbid by one increment. Neither AS or anyone else can tell what his max bid was so no report is possible before the AS snipe goes in. AS should have sent you a proxy-outbid report - has it arrived yet?

So remember, it's not the last bid that wins, it's the highest bid that wins. AS prevents bidding wars by bidding on your behalf at the end of the auction but it does not guarantee a win. You can help yourself by knowing your market place inside-out (do your research and watch what goes on) and learning from other winners.

R2 (an occasional winner!)
