Help with when to start my bidding

There are 4 items I want to bid on. I read that putting in a bid early just drives up the bidding and that it's best not to show up till the very end. How do I activate my bid and put in my max and leave the rest to you without standing watch? I don't want to let something slip away from me because I didn't have a bid in. I'm so confused and I'm obviously SO NEW to this and I need lots of help. Thanks1
