OK, can someone, please, explain why my bid of $36.15 was "too low" when the winning price of the item was $36.00?
Admittedly, I am rather new to this game - but does this make sense to anyone?

Because you didn't reach ebay's bid increment:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-increments.html

Your bid needed to be $37.00 ($36 current bid plus $1.00 increment) to be placed, but that doesn't mean it would have been enought to win.
