I’m sorry to say due to me, there is somebody else out there posting nasty comments to discussion boards about snipers! Wink

Here’s the auction & bid history:

Auction started: Nov-16-03 00:01:11 PST
Auction ended: Nov-23-03 00:01:11 PST
Minimum bid: $179.99

ME..........$186.00..........Nov-23-03 00:01:01 PST
Net.........$185.50..........Nov-23-03 00:00:10 PST
Am1.........$180.00.........Nov-22-03 21:05:46 PST

Only 3 bidders, 2 of them snipers. It looks like Net was a manual sniper. Attributing the name “Sniper” to Net may not be appropriate since Net’s bid came a full minute before the end of the auction. My winning bid is the actual snipe amount (no proxy reserve).

Net seems to be a fairly knowledgeable bidder – placed a bid that was 2 bid increments + $0.51 above the current winning bid within the last minute of the auction – not a bad strategic bid! Then in I swoop in the last 10 secs of the auction and snatch the prize for a bid a mere $0.50 above Net’s proxy! Razz I think I can hear Net’s wails even now! I would be if I were Net! Wink

At first when I was typing this note, was a question “Why did I win?” because I couldn’t see how I could win for only $.50 more than Net’s when the bid increment at this bid level is $2.50. Confused Then I realized that the Net’s winning bid showing on the screen before AS placed my bid would’ve been $182.50 with the $185.50 held as proxy. So when I figured out how the bidding worked, I just turned this note into a “gloat note”! Big Grin

Now I only hope that the item is OK since it literally is the lowest price Eek I’ve seen this type item (dig.camera) go for in the last several weeks I’ve been bid group sniping them! Maybe I got a deal Big Grin – maybe I got taken! Frown We'll see! Wink

Snipe on!

Hi Mrs.M!

I just visited a couple of the info links posted on this forum -- apparently "sniping" is a favorite technique to hate by quite a few ebay bidders! They post on discussion boards/forums how horrible sniping is and how loathsome perveyors of such practices are! Wink It's all really quite entertaining! Wink

It is such a possibility that I referred to regarding Net.

Congrats...maybe one day I can grow up to be an real sniper too. Cool

But until then I'll keep asking my newbie questions...

"when the bid increment at this bid level is $2.50."

How do you know what the bid increments are?

Also, How do you use the instant UBBcodes? I just copy and pasted the quote from the posting.

Hi TxGirl!

Bid increments are established by Ebay. If you go to ebay and click on help, enter "bid increments" in the search field, you'll eventually get to the following info:

Current Price..............Bid Increment
$ 0.01 - $ 0.99........ $ 0.05
$ 1.00 - $ 4.99........ $ 0.25
$ 5.00 - $ 24.99........ $ 0.50
$ 25.00 - $ 99.99........ $ 1.00
$ 100.00 - $ 249.99........ $ 2.50
$ 250.00 - $ 499.99........ $ 5.00
$ 500.00 - $ 999.99........ $ 10.00
$1000.00 - $2499.99........ $ 25.00
$2500.00 - $4999.99........ $ 50.00
$5000.00 and up............ $100.00

Also, on any specific Ebay auction, when you click on "Bid" to make a manual bid, the ebay screen will indicate what the the current bid increment and what the next lowest acceptable bid is.

Hi Lexie!

Thanks for sharing in my triumph! Wink

I've dabbled in ebay jewelry bidding myself -- never seriously though. I'm the type that finds a recently posted auction for a multi-caret diamond piece "appraised" at several $1000's and bids the opening bid of $10! Eek What can I say?! I'm a big spender when it comes to jewelry! Wink Big Grin

Good luck with your pursuit of the "shiny things"! Smile
