From time to time items appear in EBAY quoted in foreign currency, such as: GBP = Great Britain Pounds. Can I place a snipe against such an auction? If so, do I bid in GBP or USD?

As long as they ship where you live. Normally, it will state both exchanges on the page. At any rate, Ebay converts it for you.

The bid is placed in whatever currency the auction is in. If the auction is in GBP, then your bid is in that currency. Thus, a bid of 12.50 GBP means that you are bidding 12.50 British pounds, NOT 12.50 dollars.

From AS faq:
Your maximum bid will be in the currency of the auction. If the seller is accepting US dollars, then a max bid for 125.75 will be for 125 US dollars and 75 cents. eBay should also have a converted price in US dollars underneath the price in GBP or whatever else it is in...also, there are sites you can go to where you can convert currency. Try checking out www.xe.com, I use it all the time. Then again, I deal mostly in items coming from Japan, that's why.

I did a "search" (top of page). Entered "currency" in "Search Words" and "Donaldjr" in "Author Name".

Just because Ebay does this DON'T assume the seller will accept $ until after you have asked. In any case, the Ebay exchange rate is nonsense, based on an imaginary bank that charges no commission and has no exchange rate margin. Add at least 5% to what Ebay says to get an idea of what you will actually spend.
I have never had this experience in the auction. However, maybe because I have only bought from England. What was stated was what I paid. Probably is good advise to ask if the rate shown is correct. You never know.
