I didn't find anything in the FAQs or elsewhere about this, but I assume that AS does not actually go all the way up to your max bid unless it is necessary to win the auction. Is that correct?

That is not correct. AS places one bid (as described by Smart) at the max amount you set up. Ebay's proxy bidding then comes into affect. Read up on proxy bidding under eBay's Help System.

The original question said AS does not actually go all the way up to your max bid unless it is necessary to win the auction. Is that correct? - the implication being that AS intelligently calculates the level of bid to place. This is not correct! Sorry if you take umbrage - see'ya!
