I've noticed in other people's posts that there's often a message that says "this post was edited...". But I've edited quite a few of my own posts and don't usually see that message. Is there a time-limit on how quickly you can edit your own post without that message being added? Or do *YOU* see it and *I* don't?

I'm experimenting by editing this post...

...and I don't see a banner...

It doesn't always seem to be 10 minutes:
This one is 8 minutes: >>> Click here <<<

Also, you have "around" 30 minutes to delete a post. It does kind of mess up the Forum's home page, in that it leaves a blank under the "Last Post" column.

Let me see what I can get for the lowest time on this post.

Looks like it's around 8 minutes. Nice round number.

Of course, if you get bored, you can always mess around with the edit timestamp.

And you can even remove them if you don't want people to see it took you 25 minutes and several posts to get your point across.

That's probably because you put a fair amount of time and energy into your posts. Most posts are short, so they take very little time to re-read/edit after they have been posted. And some people don't read their own posts to see if they want to make changes, at least it appears so.

Nope. It's not uncommon for me to edit my posts 3 or 4 times. As long as you get it in before 8 minutes, no ding. This post is an example, I've changed it 5 or 6 times.

A special note: On that first link, I saw that Chatter went back and lowered his number of successful snipes. It wasn't a big deal, but it was obvious that Chatter wanted to be accurate.

So Rick, how can you tell what Chatter changed when he did his edit?

And, while I'm at it, when I want to quote only part of someone else's previous post, is there a short-cut? Currently I click the quote-marks in the post I want to quote, then delete everything that's extra.

Still learning to drive this thing...
I had read his post before he changed it. After I saw the edited notice, I re-read it. I usually do that to see if I can find out what the person decided to change after they posted it. Why, you might ask? See Brussels sprouts and little-white-balls discussion. Razz

Another way to quote is to use the icon on the posting page. You'll see in under "Instant UBBCode" to the right of "Instant Graemlins". Wink

Oh, and another way to quote something is to put the necessary UBBCode before and after the text. This is an example:
Any text that I want to quote.

must appear before the text, and the
must appear after the text. Be sure to use "[" and "]" instead of "{" and "}", and you must have the "/".

Ok, so you cut and paste what you want, then put the coding around it manually? That would work.

As for catching the edits, I'll have to test you on that one of these days. Since writing and editing is my line of work (or part of it), I tend to be a perfectionist, so I've been known to edit posts for silly things like stray commas or tiny typos...

But don't quote me on that! (grin)
