Just to put you all on your guard, I've just received an email entitled

"TKO NOTICE: Verify Your Identity"

purporting to be from eBay.

The content is very convincing with all logos & links etc.

The text is as follows;

quote:
Dear eBay customer,

During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification procedures, we have detected a slight error in your billing information.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information ( i.e.change of address).
2. Submiting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
3. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due to an internal error within our processors.

Please update and verify your information by clicking the link below:

https://scgi.ebay.com/saw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?RegisterEnterInfo

If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your ability to sell or bid on eBay will become restricted.
Kenneth Pavet,

eBay Safe Harbour Dpt .

As this doesn't address me by name, or username, I'm sure it's not genuine. I've reported both cases to spoof@ebay.com but haven't got their reply as yet.

These guys are getting clever - if you even view the email they can tell you exist. How?
They assign images in the email with a unique id that tallies with the email address it was sent to. If you view the email, they can tell that that unique image has been downloaded and it confirms that someone has read the email. Thus they know that the email address is valid. This is a fact! So by viewing Spam (at work or at home) you are confirming that you exist and opening yourself up to more (and more) spam!

So, how do you check that the email is legit without reading it and confirming you exist. Answer: read it on the server before downloading it. Better answer: let someone else read it for you and delete all known spam before it gets to you.

I recommend a product called Mailwasher - it's from New Zealand and is pretty cheap. This morning, the majority of my email was spam - mailwasher hid most of it leaving me with 4 legit emails and 3 potential spams. I can quickly tell mailwasher whether they're friendly and that's it - done! [_ more _]

Are you viewing them on the server at that point?

No R2, the emails are downloaded first. As soon as Netscape finishes downloading it then scans the list and sends all that it recognises as junk straight to the trash folder. It's still necessary to delete them finally from there of course, but that gives me a chance to vet them occasionally to see if it's scrapping anything I might want.

It may not be as good as a dedicated programme but it's free and simple (like me - simple that is).

Mrs. M., I'm not sure what you're saying in turn Confused . The normal way to read emails is to download them from your ISP's server and then open them, but some have a facility to open and read emails while they remain on the server ('least mine does, I can't speak for others but apparently R2 can do it).

I can access my email from any internet connection via the ISP's website. Emails can be opened, read, deleted, answered, printed, created even, without actually downloading at that time. Undeleted emails remain on the server until I download them at home. There's no provision for folders however, such as sent, trash, etc., so there's no records kept this way.

All a little bit crude when compared to the likes of Mailwasher, especially if you're on dialup. This morning I opened it to see about 10 green emails (eBay searches mostly!) and about 5 red ones - 'probable spam'.

I get a preview pane that lets me see the first 20 lines of the email which helps me quickly decide if it's spam or not. What I don't see is all the known spam - about 65 this morning. I never even see the eBay/PayPal/Nigerian scams...

I can report spam to spamcop.net and retrieve accidentally deleted emails. I can even reply to emails from within mailwasher. It allows me to set up everyone in my address book as 'friendly' and import my email accounts from Outlook Express to speed up the setting up process.

I don't recommend stuff lightly - I have tried and tested it and many of my friends have it as a result. You even get a free trial so don't just take my word for it! [_click_here_]

It works well enough for my purposes and doesn't cost anything. Like I said, I'm a simple soul.

I try not to have too much to do with Microsoft, especially Internet Exploder and Lookout Express. Does Mailwasher interface with Netscape just as well?

GG, I also have a free scanning program with my mailbox. Plus, I have Norton Internet Security. I'm sure mailwash works well. It's just that all this is pretty much built into what is existing, I think, on mine. If not, I would probably give it a try. Best thing is to delete all spam mail and don't even open it! Never got anything in the spam box worth my time!
mailwashER is a standalone program - it does it's biz on your server, then, when it's finished, you start up your ordinary email (at which point all spam has already been deleted for you). The person who told me about it is nearly 70 so it cannot be that hard to use... Wink

Suggestion 2 - get rid of Norton - it's not free and it slows your PC down - I would recommend AVG (search for "download AVG") - I now use it instead of a charged-for product. [I also check with online checkers - AVG has never let me down by missing anything!]

Your choice vs my advice! Wink
