1. Any of various large, mostly edible marine snails of the family Buccinidae, having a pointed, spiral shell, especially Buccinum undatum, which is commonly eaten in Europe.
2. large marine snail much used as food in Europe or large carnivorous marine gastropods of coastal waters and intertidal regions having a strong snail-like shell
Never eaten them but you buy them at the seaside! Usually sold from huts or, thesedays, trailers. Also try Cockles and mussels with vinegar, jellied eels (that's British version of jelly - not Jam!) and crabsticks (not made from crab!!!).
The absolute best escargot I've had was prepared in garlic butter, then topped with sour cream and parmesan cheese. It was then broiled until the cheese melted. Tasty!
hmm - they're snails. Which no-one has mentioned. Are you implying that whelks are similar to snails? I'd suggest that you have mixed up seafood with non-seafood. A bit of a Faux pas!
