I'd like to ask a question rather than join in your poll, as none of the answers really apply to me. I'm a beginner and I've placed my first two snipes on auctions I REALLY want to win. I've won quite a few things on eBay before, but never felt the need to snipe until now.

I thought it was just a case of setting the system going with the standard 5 seconds and waiting to see what happens, but having read through a lot of the posts on the forum I can see that there is more to lead times than that.

One of my auctions ends at 7.30 on Saturday evening - I would assume that's quite a peak time for auctions ending....am I right? The other (bizarrely) ends at 2.20ish AM on the following Tuesday morning - I expect that this isn't going to be so busy.

Does anyone have any advice for me on the sort of lead times I should set? I wouldn't like to lose either item just because my bid didn't get through on time.

I've stuck with the default 5 seconds and haven't missed out yet when my bid has been high enough. This might be because the items I look for don't attract super-keen bidding - there's definitely a small band of enthusiasts whose names keep coming up, but I don't think anyone else is using a sniping programme, though some certainly snipe manually. So far anything I want is mine if I'm prepared to pay for it. Then again, even if I miss out, another item of the same type will appear eventually.
