have a simple, maybe dumb, question, but dont' seem able to find the answer anywhere

I'm wondering about the process AuctionSniper follows when bidding - eg, I snipe an item, and enter USD 100 as my max. bid, with a 10 second lead. 10 seconds from the end of the auction, the price is USD 80 - does AS then just bid enough to win the auction (eg, USD 81) or does it just automatically bid my max. (ie USD 100)?

If it just automatically bids the max. in this type of situation, then AS doesn't seem very smart to me, because I'd end up paying USD 100 for the item, when I only need to pay USD 81.

I'd be grateful to anyone who can answer this. I've looked at the Help, FAQs, Tutorial, etc, but there seems to be no answer to this fairly basic question anywhere.

Edit: actually I searched through the message board here and found my answer: AS enters your max. bid, then eBay automatically bids up to your max. Now I get it. But I have a strong suggestion: can someone there put this information in the FAQs, Help, or wherever is appropriate, as it's a basic question that users will need to know the answer to.

yeah, thanks guys...but my suggestion remains - it seems region2 can't find where this question is answered (though he says it's there somewhere), though the fact that a seemingly experienced user doesn't seem to be able to find it rather demonstrates that if the info is there, it needs to be more obvious. Rick's link is sort of on the subject, but the heading for that FAQ is 'What is a "Max Bid"?' - again, I think the question should be clearly answered under an FAQ that says something like 'How does AS bid?'
Hmm - what I meant was I cannot be arsed to look on your behalf but it's probably there somewhere - here isn't the place to whinge about the lack of support and guidance for new users - we all know it's crap but have the experience to use it efficiently - you should give Support some grief via the HELP tab if you want to let AS know the problem you've had.
Good luck!

Darkstar is correct – it’s not specifically answered in the FAQ. It’s a Fairly FAQ on the forum, which should make it a candidate for the FAQs.

Maybe, if enough users file support requests asking AS that unFAQ’d question, it might just be granted permanent FAQ status with all it’s fellow (non-gender specific) FAQ’s. Come on AS – give this Q an A and put it on the FAQ’s.

AS automatically bids your max; it doesn't know what the other bids are.

BUTthat doesn't mean you'll PAY your max, because eBay (not AS) places a proxy bid - a bid on your behalf - for just one increment above the next lowest bid, up to your maximum, &100. In other words, if the highest maximum bid (other than yours), was $92, eBay would place a bid on your behalf for that amount plus one increment above that amount ($1.00), a total of $93, and you would win the item for $93.

(Actually, the proxy bid may be $93.01. Help, somebody - Can the winning bid equal the increment, or must it exceed it?)

Anyway, that's the principle of the thing.

Tom
