Does AS tell you straight away if you are outbid?

If there is currently a bid on an item, how do I know that my max bid is enough to win the auction when AS will place my bid with 5 secs left?

Due to ebay’s proxy bidding system, there’s no way of knowing what the high bidder’s full bid is, unless their bid is less than an increment higher than the second highest bid. As they say, you only have one shot (snipe), so make it your best.

Nibbling is probably the only way to test a proxy bid, but that tends to start bidding wars, which increases the final auction amount (good for the seller).
