I was waiting for my snipe to kick in at 6 seconds on a mototrcycle seat. The last bid was on the 22nd May at £31 so I put in a snipe at max £45. I watched as the seconds ticked away, but nothing happened. The auction eneded & the £31 bidder was the winner. I then looked at the last bid, which had gone up to £46 by the bidder who had bid £31. My snipe did kick in according to the bid history, but the £46 was placed on 22nd May - this didnt show up prior to the auction ending, so it was obviously a proxy bid.. I can only assume the winning bidder had used an Ebay proxy bid which outdid my snipe in the dying seconds.
How can I avoid this happening again? With manual bidding, they havent got much chance of outdoing a snipe, but a proxy bid will always win won't it?

If I understand your question, the answer is to place a higher snipe. The proxy bidder had a £46+ bid. It could have been £100. When the auction was at £31, it was because the 2nd highest bid was £30. That's how proxy bids work on ebay.

Hopefully I'm answering the right question.

Duck, it helps for you to provide an auction number and you may wish to do so in future posts, so that we may see the auction in question and understand exactly what you are speaking about.

Having said that, it simply sounds like you were outbid by the earlier bidder. His proxy bid was large enough to not only be the high bidder when you viewed the auction earlier and set yuour snipe, but it was also higher than your snipe, which was placed on time, but simply was lower than his earelier bid. In short, he was willing to pay more than you, and high bid always wins.

If you bid your max, then you did everything you were supposed to do. Take solace in that, knowing that the winner had to pay more as a result of your snipe. If you did not bid your true max and would have paid more, then make sure you do so next time you snipe, bidding the most you are willing to pay. The item will surely come up again! Smile
