i do not agree with this. i don't use this service because i am unable to snipe at all, i use it when i am not able to go perform the snipe, which is most of the time due to work/life/# of things i bid on. in the case of 1 of my snipes, the AS amount wasn't enough - i only even won from my manual snipe.
i could see the argument made if there was a cost for the snipe, but a failed snipe doesn't cost you anything; it's not as if an extra product was made that money went into that now has to be sold or discarded. it's simply a lost snipe. and a lost snipe doesn't cost anything.
The AS system is very simplistic - if they sniped and you won (whether by AS's bid or yours) then you get charged. As AS snipes at the last second and you're 'sposed to bid your max then changing it makes little sense but I can see occasions when this might happen. If you can prove that your snipe failed but your bid won then I reckon you have a case and should get your quarter back! Log a support call!

What's the difference in cost between a lost snipe and a winning snipe?

0. where would the difference come from?

Exactly.

The costs are pretty much the same to us, win or lose. In fact losing snipes probably cost us more because they incur higher support costs when people ask why they lost.

As long as you delete your snipe 5 minutes before the auction ends we wont change you. However we're still doing work. We send outbid notices and are constantly checking the status and price of the item during the duration of the auction. We check to make sure your password is valid and other things. And your snipe is stored in the database using resources there as well. The actual snipe, win or lose, is the most costly part of the process as we need enough servers to do the sniping for the number of snipes we do.

There is no problem though with deleting your snipe with 5 minutes and I don't think anyone here would feel like we've lost out. We're happy to have you as a customer for the times you aren't around to snipe manually and you leave your snipe in our system.
