Hi,

I have just used AS for the first time and got my fingers severely burnt. I wanted to bid on an item but the same seller had 2 of these items for auction on ebay and they finihed within 2 minutes of each other. I decided to load up a snipe for each of the items and if successful on the first item I would have time to cancel the second snipe.

The first auction finished and I had won the item, so I opened AS and clicked on the second item to cancel it and a message came up on my screen saying "your snipe cannot be cancelled at this time". I tried again and again until AS purchased the second item for me. The items in question were £720 each so you can imagine I not too pleased.

Is there anyone else out there who has had the same experience or anyone who could tell me what went wrong, are there time limits to the cancellation process?

At that close a time the computer is commited.
Now: This is where that bid group comes in.
1. click on the place where it says: manage folders.
(kind of on the left top of where the snips are.

2. Then on the left you will see a place to set up a bid folder.
3. fill out what name etc.
4. click on the square where it says. "Bid Group"
and then go back to your snipes. click on the two that you want the computer to try for one of and again at the top area you will find a place where it says: move to so there is where you note the new file and move them to there
There I a much better demo of the above in the help area (Bid Groups)

That way the computer knows you want only one of them. Note you can have set it to how many you want to win of that type. Eg 1 of the group or 2 of that etc.

I had to find that out myself earlier.
good luck. Since it is the same seller, I would send them a note and just say that you tried to cancel the second bid but could not. See I they will allow you to get out of bid. It is worth a try.

Cool

There are indeed time limits to the cancelation process. A snipe cannot be canceled in the last two minutes of an auction. Had you spent even five minutes perusing either this forum or AS' policies, you would easily have learned this. The fact that you were bidding big bucks on the auctions in question seems, to me, even more reason to do so before bidding.

Sorry, I don't mean anything personal against you. It's just that I never cease to be amazed how often folks come in here after using AS once or twice, posting angry face Mad icons, wanting to know how they managed to lose, miss a snipe, be unable to cancel a snipe at the last minute, etc. Many demand in much ruder terms than you did. It just makes me recall that when I found AS nearly two years ago, I read through TONS of stuff, including this forum, before I even attempted my first free snipe. Though I did not actually post on this forum until several months after I had been using AS comfortably, I had read through it countless times prior to bidding.

I see that many people who know little about sniping--or even little about how eBay works, for that matter--come in and post these comments. While, as Mrs. M always says, newcomers are welcome and may bring fresh perspectives to the forum, I am amazed at how little time and effort was put into understanding how eBay and Auction Sniper work, before using either. The fact that this is compounded by angry Mad or whining Frown complaints here simply compunds my bewilderment.

I don't mean to sound haughty or self-righteous. I realize that I am a conservtaive person, one who tends to look before he leaps, and not everyone is this way. However, to me it seems incumbent on any consumer to familiarize himself with the rules of the house before he enters and plays the game. How is it that so many folks do not do this, then complain about it after the fact? Confused

Chatter, I stand by my statement. Not every apple falls from the same tree, you know. We all make mistakes and overlook things we shouldn't. Maybe we need first of all to be a little more patient and not come in storming with the red faces. That bothers me more than the questions that would have answered themselves had we just taken the time to read the rules first. Wink

Like I've said in the past, if AS didn't want the mad ( ) icons used, they wouldn't be there.

Maybe it's me. I just don't notice them until someone points them out, and then I have to go back to find them.

I'd rather cut people some slack (more of a recent opinion). I remember when I first starting using AS, I was fairly paranoid. Like chatter, I did a lot of reading, but still made some mistakes. But, some people like to read the instruction manuals, and some like to jump in and use intuition (not everyone eats Brussels sprouts). I still get weirded out when I start using a new program/service for the first time.

I've seen some leave angry posts and get a friendly welcome (usually from Mrs. M Wink) and a respectful response, and left on a positive note, and even left a complement.

This particular author's text appears reasonable and not hostile.

It's just an icon.

I hope I didn't step on anyone toes.

We snipe from 4 locations. At the 2 minute mark we begin moving your snipes throughout california to be placed and they cant be canceled.

We do have a solution to bids you'd like to place and only win 1 of. You can then bid on as many as you like and we'll keep bidding until we win one, and then stop and not bid on any more of the items you entered after that. Such as if you wanted to snipe on a "Finding Nemo" dvd. There are probably 100 of them on eBay. You'd want to snipe a low price on all 100, then just wait around until you won one of them, but you certainly wouldnt want 100 Smile

It's called a Bid Group. There is a very nice turtorial on the Help tab. It's one of the first few links on the Help tab. And it's simple and should only take a minute or two to review.

I'm really sorry about your duplicate win. I'll bet if you contact the seller and explain he'll be quite happy to sell you just one.
I am fairly new here, in fact, I AM new here. Being computer saavy and with a little eBay experience as well, I found this site to be very interesting and helpful to me in winning bids.

There is a TON of information to go through and while most of it is pretty straightforward, reading through all the forums and threads would take an eternity (there are 17 pages in this forum alone).

Unless they upgrade the forum software to allow us to track forum threads better, most users are NOT going to read through all of them unless they have nothing better to do. I can appreciate those that are more cautious and take their time before leaping, but there are some out there who don't look, leap, hit the bottom and bounce back up screaming.

We can either beat them up further and chastise them (effectively destroying their desire to contribute to the community) or we can be patient, explain thing a million or so times and enjoy a higher posting rating.

Just my $.02, and having been a computer geek for probably too long, I've grown to be a little more patient. Unless of course they DESERVE to be chastised. Then all bets are off. Big Grin

Actually, everyone is right to some degree, I think. There is a lot of things to learn about AS and it does not come overnight. Red faces are there to use and of course we can, but it is a little more ,maybe, acceptable not to use them before a question is answered in a reasonable time. Not the end of the world, however and we sure do not want this forum to become like one I have visited on Ebay, believe me! I sure have asked enough questions and still am. I am positive the person only meant I am aggravated at what happened...help!! Ok, on to bigger and better things! Smile

Take a chill pill or 2 scoops of ice cream and call me in the morning! Big Grin

Rick mentioned something about patiently answering the same question a million times -- is there an AS FAQ listing somewhere? Like, "I sniped an item, and still lost. How come?" Some of these answers/tips, like "...the HIGHEST bid wins, not the LAST bid." could be in a FAQ listing, or maybe a Snipers Tips List.

Snipe on (& don't sweat the trivial!) Wink

Jabbergah Cool
Hi,

I didn't realise how much interest this would cause. I think the red face I posted was due to my embarassment rather than anger but then it is just an icon. I do sometimes jump in with both feet and eyes closed but it does work more often than not. After reading all the replies I accept that this was my own fault. I am now looking at it in a positive light and will sell the second item purchased and clock it up as experience. Anyone in the market for a .........oh never mind.

Thanks for all your help

This page says up to 1 minute tho...

Also, another question which I don't think it was made very clear about the usage of BigGroup.

Lets say I am sniping for 2 items which one ends 30 seconds after the other one. Both items are put in a biggroup, set to win only one item and lead time is 5 seconds.

Assumed AS has won the 1st one and the 2nd one is finishing in 30 seconds, will AS snipe the 2nd one or not? Notice AS only has less 25 seconds to cancel the 2nd snipe.

I guess AS should make this very clear for BigGroup users.
Chineseway,

I realize this is two weeks after you started the thread, but a suggestion on how to deal with your problem should something similar happen to you or others in the future:

There have been a few times that I have not wanted a bid to go through, whether it's an accidental manual bid, a snipe I couldn't cancel, or simply "buyer's remorse". One solution that can be a moneysaver is to IMMEDIATELY email the seller, explain the situation to them, and offer to pay the difference between your bid and the next highest bid, and ask them to see if the #2 person still wants the item (which is why you want to do this quickly). If it works out, at worst you will only pay the amount over bid #2, and I've had at least one occasion where the seller let me out of the purchase completely and sold it to #2 for their bid amount (this was someone I had bought things from before, but it was still a very nice gesture).

You may have to contact bidder #2 yourself if the seller is slow to respond, and then it can get a bit complex, since you both have to let the seller know that you are in agreement with the proposed solution.

You may also want to add an extra $1 or two to what you would still pay, just to cover the hassle factor and extra charges for two PayPal payments (if applicable).

This may not always work, but it's better than being stuck with TWO tickets to George W. Bush's 2003 Thanksgiving dinner down in Crawford, Texas (though it may be better without "W" there anyway!). Smile
