Look at it as your "dues" for using AS as a backup. AS will charge you for a snipe even though you were already the high bidder, because it's there waiting to enter your bid regardless of who the high bidder is. If you're going to bid manually then cancel your AS bid if you don't want to get charged for a snipe.
Yes we charge for any snipe where we sniped and you won. The one exception we are eventually going to make for this is users who first singup and import bids they already have on eBay since they didn't really know about sniping most likely and have already bid on eBay.
From all the support I have done I can say without a doubt that all bidding should be done as a snipe. Trying to bid on eBay first and then placing a snipe to try and avoid our fees will cost you more than our fees.
Basically it tips off other bidders that you are bidding and so they bid higher. And most of the time that's going to end up costing you several dollars more. People tend to bid lower when they think nobody else is bidding.
Since most of the time our fee only ends up being 25 cents or so and most of the time other bidders would bid a few bucks more it's normally best to snipe.
Apparently, both replies to my post ignored the full text of my message (that was sent by email).
As my original email said, I do *NOT* bid first on eBay. I understand all the reasons for that. What I did say was that I was testing another snipe program, primarily because I have a lot of snipes that I do and AuctionSniper can get expensive fairly quickly... so I was using a PC-based program to snipe first. Then, for whatever reason, in case of PC or connection failure, I set up AuctionSniper to catch the item.
In every case, the first snipe (PC-based) would always be a few cents higher than the AuctionSniper bid. For example, the PC program would snipe at $11.88 and AuctionSniper would be set at $11.86. The results were inconsistent. I was charged several times, but not always, for the AuctionSniper snipes even though I was already high bidder (with a higher bid amount) from the PC program. Doesn't make sense to me.
I was looking for ways to reduce the potential expense with using AuctionSniper (yes I know about the click-through and affiliate program). As I said, the fees here could add up quickly for me.
3rq: you are charged for any auction we place a bid on that you win. We ALWAYS place a bid if you enter a snipe. There a bazillion reasons why we snipe even though you may already be higher bidder, but we do bid in every case. This is the safest thing for us to do to ensure that eBay changes or updates dont effect our sniping. i.e. if they made a change and we couldn't tell if you were already high bidder or we grabbed the wrong info and thought you were but you weren't etc. So we always bid, every time, no matter what.
Thus any auction you snipe with us that you win you will be charged for.
