I live in Australia and would like to bid for an item posted on a US site, however am blocked from doing so because the seller doesn't ship to Australia. However, he does ship to Europe, where my father lives.

I know I can't bid using my aussie ebay registration, but if auction sniper bids for me, are the bids technically coming from the US?

kellie,

I’m not a fan of placing non-sniping bids, but you might want to place a tiny (very tiny) proxy bid to verify that the seller has exempted you. If the item is very important, it might be a bummer to find out in the last 8 seconds that the seller screwed up. This is not a strong recommendation, seeing that since I’m in the States this doesn’t happen to me, just something to think about.
Thanks for the suggestions...here's the update.

I tried placing a bid on the item but am definitely blocked.

I sent the buyer the link that Rick suggested and got this response:

That website address doesn't come up with anythin appropriate here - must be on the eBay Australia website only. I ship to Australia - the only reason this item excluded Australia was my wife didn't know there was skiing there when she listed the item!!!! Have you attempted to bid on it?

But if Rick (from the US) can access the site shouldn't this US seller be able to?

I hate unsolved puzzles, so if you have any other suggestions please be my guest!
kellie,

For what it’s worth, I had to be signed onto ebay to bring up that exemption link. You can always tell the seller that at least 2 Yanks (me, and I’m assuming Mrs. M.) were able to open it. That link is from ebay U.S. of A.

If the seller still can’t bring it up, then you, or them, might want to contact ebay support, or get on one of ebay’s forums for some suggestions.

Would like to hear the results. Good luck.
It was suggested to me that I try this link
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?PreApproveBidders to become a pre-approved bidder. Seller emailed to say that he had used the link to put me on the list, but I'm still blocked.

Anyways, I feel like I'm pestering the guy, and his emails are getting shorter and shorter, so I think I'll just leave it. Shame, 'cos I would have been a competitive bidder!

Thanks very much for your help - I really appreciate it.

Kellie
Not that I'm suggesting this -- just hypothetical: would it be possible to create a new ebay ID and claim to be from USA (even though from somewhere else)?? As long as one has cleared with the seller shipping to a different address, the correct address could be transmitted at check out time??

Not addressing ethics or potential TOS violations.... Wink
