I am a novice in this arena and I need some
advice. I am about to bid on an item which
a particular bidder, whom I have observed in the past, will also bid. From my research, I have
concluded that he is a sniper. What is the best
way to deal with this? Would sniping through
two or three "snipe" companies be helpful? I
notice he ALWAYS wins and his bid comes in only
seconds before the end of auction. I want this
item very much and need help/advice. Thank you.

What I would do is:
Put my bid in on AS with a lead time depending upon time of day and day of week. See the other forum leads for suggestions.
BUT. Be sure to bid the very highest you will pay. A price that is one that if he/she paid 1.00 more and won, your feelings will not be totally shattered.
You would be able to shrug it off with, they paid too much.
That is where the bid groups come in handy.
Good luck. Wink

If the other bidder thinks it's worth more then you, then you're screwed (or they are). If the other sniper has deeper pockets then you, then you're screwed (or they are). DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! (one more don't) DON'T let someone else dictate what you THINK the value of the item is. If you think it's worth $10 - bid $10; If you think it's worth $10,000,000 - bid $10,000,000.

Add a bunch of smileys and IMHO's and LOL's.

To snipe against another sniper is not much different than against the unknown max amount of the current high bidder. Enter your max, and let the cards fall where they may.

Got your max entered? Now think, what if you are outbid? Will you wish you had bid more? If so, you didn't enter your REAL max, and you should go change it. If you lose, you should walk away satisfied that you didn't pay to much.

One real plus for AS is the ability to put in a snipe days before the end of the auction. If you use the proxy bidding system on eBay and later have potential "buyer's remorse" prior to the end of the auction, all you can do is hope someone else will outbid you. You could retract your bid, but it is frowned upon Frown , and you must leap a number of hurdles. If you are using AS, you can always go to your snipe and change or delete it until around ten minutes before the end of the auction.
One other plus is that you don't get sucked into a bidding contest, just to satisfy your ego, and later win something you paid too much for.
And finally, unless the item you want is something extremely rare that you absolutely need immediately, (or you happen to know more about its value than anyone else) you can always wait for that or a similar item to show up another time and try to get it for what you believe to be its true value to you. Sorry for the wordiness, just wanted to give you lots of tips (that have proably already shown up dozens of times in other topics or forums. Smile
