Why oh why do so many people in eBay describe their items as "Awesome"?

In general I would say that most things described like this are rather tame and often not very nice.... Wink

Other pet hates of mine are "adorable" (for something utterly revolting) "rare" (that's apart from the twenty other identical items on the same page) "Unique" (ditto) "Patriotic" (depends very much on where you live...).

However, once in a while you come across a real gem - a real rarity that I would never get anywhere else, like I found this morning....only problem is, the seller is in the US and doesn't accept Paypal!! ARRGGH!

Other pet hates of mine :
... or when they 'compare' their item with another and the comparison is TOTALLY inappropriate.

You are allowed to say "Awesome" about us here, because of course -

Very, very true. Big Grin

Got a friend or relative in the States that will take your PayPal, buy a Money Order and mail it for you?

Some of my favorites:

  • MIB
'Maybe it's Broken' - We found this item still in the box and never took it out to see if it works. The box is pretty ratty, so take your chances and bid high!

  • Like New
Yeah, like it was new when I was 5 and hid it in the sump pump. We recently had to pump the sump and found it again! It's really beautiful with a wonderful patina!

  • Rare | One of a kind | Hard to find
Well, I'm sorry, but I found this auction fairly easily, so it wasn't too hard to find Wink One of a kind? You're trying to sell an item with an original production of 10,000,000! Rare? About the only thing I see that's rare is my steak dinner.

  • Near Mint
If you place this item on your mantle and stand back 30 feet you'll hardly see the crack down the back or the flea bites on the rim or the finger paints my grandchild used on it to make it 'more pretty'.

  • I think it's original
Looks just like the real thing, so it must be! I didn't have it checked because I figure if I tell you I don't know for sure you won't be able to sue me when you find out that Tiffany didn't make saran wrap lampshades.

  • BIN - $350.00
Sure you can get this item from almost any other seller for $25, but I sell these in my shop and know what they are worth! Don't be fooled by those other auctions, they can't be as nice as mine! I have my own shop you know! (do they sell that quote by P.T. Barnum?).

I have visions of people with houses full of glass fibre, polystyrene and expanded foam in different colours..... Wink

bjones - I'm speechless!!

Mrs M - an international money order is fairly expensive to get, so I'll have to pass on these particular widgets. They're beautiful glass ornaments - lovely to look at but with no actual practical use. Frown

Another one I love ...

I sometimes (ok, make that 'sometimes go crazy') buy semi-precious stones on eBay. You wouldn't believe the number of people that will tell you:

  • Emerald has typical inclusions
This means it's a cloudy piece of crap! Contrary to what these sellers want you to believe, there are flawless emeralds out there!

  • Doublet/Triplet is hidden
in tiny print buried somewhere in the auction description. Sure they are pretty, but they are also of much less value once that opal has been sliced as thin as an onion skin and glued to a black rock!

  • No size reference in picture
(this is a repeat, but bears repeating) Yes, you did tell me it was 3mm x 3mm, but your picture made it look like I could see it with my naked eye! Put a dime or a quarter next to it! Jeez!

  • 57.62 Carats!
Yep, if you add up all those .07 carat pieces it very well might total that! Why not just tell us it's a LOT in the auction title? Don't waste my time making me look at auctions I don't want to bid on!

  • 57.62 Carats (in Matrix)
Not only is it uncut and not polished - it hasn't even been removed from the hunk of material it formed in! By the time I ground away the matrix (if I had the means to do it) I'd have a grain of sand worth about .05!

  • Lab Created | Heat Treated | Oil Treated
Almost always these little caveats are buried towards the end of a paragraph with 27 sentences! Sorry bud, if I wanted a fake, I'd search for a fake!

  • Picture doesn't capture it's true beauty
Then why did you use that picture? One of the 'tricks' I love (especially with opals) is when they use ultra-high halogen lights to bring out every color imaginable - something you'll never see in the real world!

  • Eye Clean
All I'll say is that you need glasses!

Ok, I'm done ranting (for now)! Next!

  • It's absolutely fascinating the different things we all use eBay to look for. Before Mory mentioned it, I had no idea you could buy cheese on-line, and now I know that you can get quality gemstones!

It amazes me, however, that there are so many sellers in "niche" markets that have no idea what they are selling. You would not believe the number of items described as "Siberian Husky" that are actually "Alaskan Malamute" and vice versa. I even once emailed a seller who had described a statue of a Cairn Terrier (a little Highland breed used for catching rats) as a Husky!

There is also a tendency to say that a picture or statue has been "authorised by top judges" or is "true to the breed standard". Both statements are a guarantee of absolute rubbish!

That happens to me a lot, too. Only I've given up on looking at Boston Terrier items on line. There's only so much that can fit into one house.

When I was showing and listed for breed rescue a humane society employee called me and told me they had a Boston puppy that needed to be rescued. He said that the markings were correct but it was very young and the ears weren't up. I told him that the ears don't go up completely until they're several months old. So I ran down to the shelter but couldn't find the pup. He led me to a cage with a very young springer puppy and lectured me on not being able to recognize my own breed! (Well, the markings were right....)
