Possible, Rick. Must admit that Yanks are generally better at spelling than we are, although using the wrong word is not really misspelling - those that do, do it to the spoken word, like Mrs Malaprop.

We have a friend who does this on a regular basis, usually with names of people and places:
Gorecki becomes Gore-tex, Salutation Inn becomes Saluchoochion Inn, Suilven becomes Sullivan, etc.

Don't forget that from the late 1950s, it was decreed that teaching English grammar and spelling was unneccessary in English schools - a fatal mistake as now we rely on the written word more and more.

Employers interviewing school leavers have despaired at the lack of literacy for a long while!

You only have to watch a news broadcast where some so-miscalled 'celebrity' is being interviewed, starting every sentence with 'basically' and ending it with 'right' to despair as to how these half-wits are being paid more than the minimum wage.
