I have been playing in an aussie auction site, its not really well known yet and doesnt really cater to the individual smaller purchaser much, but these are some of there features...

Typically, auctions end at the closing time posted. There are some exceptions to this, however. If there are any bids on a particular lot within 10 minutes of the auction closing time ("Going, Going, Gone!" period), it will be extended until there are no bids for 10 continuous minutes.

There is no limit to the number of times an online auction can be extended. This makes this auction work more like a live auction where the bidding does not stop as long as there is still interest in the product, rather than assigning an arbitrary cut-off time. To ensure that you do not get outbid make sure you monitor the auction until you have won the item or enter a bid that you think will win!

Bids placed at online auctions follow this order of precedence: bid price over bid quantity over initial bid time. In other words, if two or more bids are for the same price, the higher quantity will take precedence. If two or more bids are for the same bid price and bid quantity, the time the bidder placed their first bid on that lot takes precedence.

For example, lets say we auction four computers at an online auction and there are initially two bids: one at $100 for three computers and one bid at $100 for one computer. If a new bidder bids $120 for one computer, that bidder becomes the highest successful bidder, leaving three computers to assign to lower priced bidders. The bidder at $100 for three computers will remain successful because of greater quantity. The bidder at $100 for one computer will be bumped from the successful list. If both these bidders had bid for two computers, then the bidder with the earliest initial bid will remain successful. Therefore, it is important to get your bids in early to help you win in a tie

Its quite fun really!!

Interesting this came up at this time! I was comtemplating making a post to ask what that anti-viral program was that R2 recommended a few months back! Could someone post the website again?

RE: The auto-extended auctions -- forces bidders to monitor the end of auctions again and makes AuctionSniper software obsolete. I think I like letting AS do that for me.

Yes, Jabber, and it forces the prices up also. When I buy from Ubid, it usually takes several attempts ( they sell the same kind of item a lot) before I can win a bargain. I prefer AS!!!!

Two anti-virus programs?? Care to expound on why two? You actually are in a good position to compare the strengths & weaknesses of the two software.

One obvious feature in which AVG has the advantage is cost -- there is a free version of AVG available, whereas Norton costs $$. I can only wonder -- is it worth it? I can;t help but remember the old adages, "You get what you pay for!" & "There's no free lunch!" Consequently, is protection from a free anti-viral software any protection at all? Or maybe partial protection? Or maybe better than nothing? Anyone care to assuage my concerns?

Could we conclude the FIXED auction endings tend to be more attractive to BUYERS (especially SNIPERS!) and FLEX auction endings more attractive to SELLERS??? But then, wouldn't an auction methodology that is less attractive to buyers inherently be less attractive to sellers, too?
Jabber - I thoroughly recommend AVG, we used to run a pay-for anti v program at work and when I ran AVG along side it, it picked up the same things.

Shirl - the US Ubid sound very similar!

This Aussie site has its pros and cons...its not well known, so you can get really good bargins, but you are competing with the big guys at times.

They also sell alot of the same thing, over a period of months, so if you are patient and remember your prices you are OK.

No search engines and no luxuries like *completed item* searches though.....so you have to do some research.

Good thing though....I bought 3 complete high performance PC's with flat screens and 2 yr warranty for work, for the same money that 1 would of cost.

Gotta be happy with that Smile
Jabber - I have AVG for virus checking and Zonealarm for firewall. I chuck Norton off the computer (which is an ordeal in itself) whenever I buy one with a pre-installed copy. Norton caused my system to blow up once when upgrading operating systems, costs too much $$$, slows my computer way down and is just plain nasty when you want to uninstall it (it leaves files and settings behind that aren't fun to locate).

Then I have the xp restore feature turned on, make a full backup once a month and incremental backups daily (to dvd - I can save about a week per disc).
