I guess it had to happen. I entered a snipe bid for $87.99 and another sniper (lucky duck) sniped it for $36.79! The reason for the failure was "NOT IN TIME". I have a lead time of 10 on all of my snipes, and this is the first time it hasn't worked. I suppose that Sunday night is very busy, but shouldn't 10 be enough? Hello, Dip Pen Man.
In answer to your question, 10 seconds is usually not long enough on Sunday nights. That's when eBay is busiest and I usually use a lead time of about 25 seconds. That sounds like it would be long enough for someone to see your bid and respond, but with eBay's circuits as backed up as they get on Sunday nights, it's about right. If the auction ends on the half hour or quarter hour on a Sunday night I'd leave about 45 seconds. That's just a general guideline.
On weekdays with auctions that don't end on the hour, half hour, or quarter hour I usually use 8 seconds, and on those that do end at those times I usually use 20 seconds.
I know it's not much help, but whatever item it is usually shows up on eBay again sooner or later. Sorry to hear you missed out on this widget, and better luck next time.

Now I feel like an idiot! I already deleted all my Not In Time losses from my screen!

I always delete my losses, once I check out the final price, but I must admit I did it with a bit of a vengeance tonight, because of the large number I lost due to Not In Time, which hasn't happened to me like this before. I'd have felt maybe a little better if I had gotten some free snipes out of the deal. Bummer! If it ever happens again, I'll remember.
I know Sunday night was bad for getting snipes through to ebay in time, but earlier today ( on Tuesday, March 2) it happened to me again! Had an 8 second lead time at an odd time on a Tuesday - always been enough before, until Sunday night and now today. So sad - it was a particularly nice piece of glassware that doesn't pop up frequently, and my snipe was $21 over the listed final price.

But, I did remember to claim my 2 free snipes this time!
