OK, I know it's not nice to brag, so I won't tell everyone that I live in San Diego, CA, and our weather is nearly perfect here almost all the time. After growing up in the south for a while, and mostly in the midwest, I love it here!

I miss some plants that don't do well here without frost or freeze, like peonies, lilacs (although we have a version of them), hostas, lilies of the valley, etc. However, I enjoy the beautiful sub-tropicals like bougainvillea (where's a spellchecker when you need one?)and the fact that my roses and impatiens and morning glories are still blooming today, like they do every day. Never humid, and no mosquitos! (But no fireflies, either, which I do miss.) I'm mere minutes from the ocean, 45 minutes to mountains that do get snow if I miss it, about an hour or so to the desert if I want, a quick jaunt into Mexico (where we go for good cheap dental work) and 1 1/2 hr. from LA, where we occasionally go for fun - amusement parks, special concerts, to be in a TV audience, etc. An easy distance from long weekends in Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Palm Springs, Las Vegas; a cheap flight to San Francisco on Southwest Airline, - but why leave town with so much right in our own backyard? I love San Diego!

Anyway, that's what I would say if I wanted to brag about my town!
My new daughter-in-law is from the St. Petersburg area, so I've been out there, too. Now her family takes vacations out here in San Diego and have fallen in love with it. They would move here if housing prices weren't so high.

We call the price of real estate here the "weather tax". The houses may not be anything remarkable, and the lots may be modest, but the location is prime, so prices are high. Supply and demand - we see it all the time on ebay, and I guess it happens with real estate, too.

It's tough for first-time home buyers to afford to break into the market. Maybe that's always true - it was tough for us when we started out. Now our home has almost tripled in value, and become the best financial investment we're ever likely to make. We can almost retire on our equity, when the time comes. If I ever decide to sell and get a smaller place, I want an ebay-style bidding war on my property!
Littlebit, you will find land value here in Naples very expensive too. Much different than St Pete. One reason, I suppose is the southern-most location. We have a lot of very, very wealthy people here and I am sure that drives prices up.

Most people here are friendly, but people are people, you know. A lot of the residents here are from the midwest and I find them friendly! Wink

Embarrased grin - that didn't work, did it?!

I've always thought of Seatte as a wet San Diego Smile

I wish that we had the sun most of the time, but I'll take rain/overcast any day as long as I get green instead of brown to look at!

Family and friends live near Phoenix ... I don't mind visiting for a week, but all that brown starts wearing me down Wink And they're like people in the midwest ... they think thier hills are Mountains!

bjones - ever watch 7 Brides for 7 Brothers or whatever that TV show was? That was part of their theme song.

Anyway, you're right about Seattle! Very neat ambience there! I lived across the Puget Sound for a couple of years, and really enjoyed so much about it. Used to take the ferry to Seattle. Good memories!

Actually tried to get transferred back there for a while, but no go. Our living is here, so here we are, and I am more than content. But Seattle, and maybe British columbis is on our list of places to visit on our timeshare exchange before too long.

(Although, maybe your Mother Mary face would be happier if you got a little more sunshine? Just wondering Wink)

That would be, "Here Come The Brides" with Bobby Sherman and Joan Blondell Smile One of my favorite shows growing up ... wait! No, I don't remember that show at all ... I am much too young!

I think it would take a lot more than sun to make Mother happy! In fact after reading this, she said, "Honestly! What were you thinking? You just weren't thinking were you!"
