I just joined AS and have been trying to understand the logic. I'm sure there is an easy answer to my question but I can't figure it out (even if it's right in front of me).

I understand that AS places my one single maximum bid just seconds before the auction closes.

It seems to me that, as long as I can be at my computer, it would be more advantageous to place the bid through ebay and AS. The big difference being I could pay just enough to win the auction instead of overpaying.

Consider these two examples with the assumption that the current price of the item is $55 and I am willing to pay up to $100.

1. Using AS I enter my maximum bid of $100 and I win the auction

2. Using ebay proxy bidding I enter $100 in the final seconds and it automatically proxy bids against a competitor $1 at a time until I win with a $87 bid.

Haven't I overpaid using AS in this example? Proxy bidding (at the last second) seems the most advantageous.

What am I missing?!
