If (i) it is that important and rare an opportunity, and (ii) it's an item on which there's a lot of "wobble" in how I value it and probably wobble in how others value it too (and (i) often implies (ii)), then I would bid manually, not rely on AS.

Relying on AS, you're taking the risk of people reacting manually to an AS snipe placed much longer in advance of close than you expected. Doesn't matter if your lead time is 5 seconds or 10 seconds, your bid may well be actually placed 20 or 30 seconds or more before close. And Sunday night is especially bad. My usual lead time is 8 seconds, yet commonly my snipes are placed in fact like 15 or 20 seconds prior to close. It's a fact of life. When sniping manually, obviously you should use at least 2 windows, one with the bid already set up and ready to confirm, the other to check the time left.
