I just wanted to let you guys know that I won this auction! (Closed a little while ago but still .. Wink ). I used up 1 of 3 free snipes and was incredibly lucky that first time! Take a look at what happened here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2535411601&category=41480&rd=1

As you can see, I barely made it alive! Eek A guy at the last minute bid like $50 and I edged him out by a few $$! Even if I wanted to, I couldn't change my max 'cause I was away from my PC for the entire morning and afternoon! (I was lucky). Can anyone make out what exactly happened there ?

Thanks to AuctionSniper and thank you all who helped me out before!

My advice for for people starting out with the AS is: (1) Set your lead time to 8 - 10 sec and maybe even 5 sec, but I feel comfortable with 8 - 10, (2) bid your MAX, (3) Use random amounts. For example, if your max is $150, bid $153.57 or $151.49. Those 3 things must be used together to succeed. But, at the end of the day, the most important is your MAX bid. If you lost then it means someone outbid you and it is NOT AuctionSniper's fault, 'cause you did all that was possible to win. It's all about strategy and being quiet as to your intentions and AuctionSniper does this amazingly well!

We're with you, Daniel--bid your max. But since you make such a point of saying so, why do you say that even if you wanted to, you could not change your max, as you were away from the computer? That sounds like backsliding into proxy bidder mentality. Wink

Glad you won....
Daniel asks, "Does anyone know what happened [in the auction he narrowly won]?" Let's look at the last exciting minutes:

sivle2000( 30) $154.52 Jun-07-03 10:46:54 PDT
btvbtv( 63) $152.02 Jun-07-03 10:46:39 PDT
raevan1111( 3 ) $101.00 Jun-07-03 09:50:43 PDT
taylormade614( 2 ) $99.00 Jun-07-03 10:46:11 PDT
schemgy( 42) $97.00 Jun-07-03 10:31:34 PDT
schemgy( 42) $95.00 Jun-07-03 10:31:15 PDT
schemgy( 42) $90.00 Jun-07-03 10:31:00 PDT

The auction was slated to end on Jun-07-03 at 10:47:06 PDT. Raevan111's proxy bid withstood four challenges, three by schemgy and one by taylormade614 before btvbtv jumped in with an amateurish snipe of $152.02 (note the obvious max bid and the odd amount, students). I say "amateurish" because the snipe is almost certainly manual, coming as it did 27 seconds before the auction close. It stood no chance of holding up against a higher max bid by Daniel with 12 seconds remaining.

All I'd like to know at this point is: how much was your max bid, Daniel, and what lag time did you set up your snipe for? Confused

Steve,

My max price was $157.83 and lag time of 10 sec. I set it about 6 hrs before the auction end. Also, I was not able to be at the computer just before the auction close so I hoped the amount was sufficient. BUT what really scared me was that I was toying with the idea, just after putting in $157.83, of taking that down to $152.57 or something in that area as I didn't want to pay more than $150. I guess something told me to leave my original amount and not change it. Oh yeah, and my last advice is to GO WITH YOUR INSTINCT! Don't ever go against it! Thanks steve for the second by second account of what happened Smile Wink I guess there were no real snipers sniping that day, except me of course Big Grin

Perhaps I was unclear ? I meant that OF COURSE it's possible to change your max bid on auctionsniper BUT I was not near my pc the entire morning and afternoon, when the auction was ending, so I couldn't change it. Ok ?

Thanks,

Daniel,

Don't think I understand the question. Confused

Are you asking something about the other sniper?

Rick

Yeah, Rick, I was just asking about the other bidders, especially the nut who bid $50! But Steve pretty much took care of that response Smile Seems that no real sniping took place other than from myself.

Daniel
The second-highest bidder also placed what I would characterize as a snipe, Daniel. It was just a very poorly-timed one, being placed so far in advance of the auction close. I concluded that it must have been a manual snipe for that reason. But nonetheless, it was a snipe in form and intent. The $50+ jump on the previous bid price, which as I recall was around $100, is obviously a max bid. It would've shown up to onlookers as $2.50 more than the previous high bid; the max was only exposed when your bid topped it. Well, a max bid is one characteristic of a snipe, as is a bid in the last half-minute of an auction. Another earmark of a snipe is the odd amount -- $151.02 or something like that. Bidding in uneven amounts is a sniper characteristic.

But you didn't answer my questions: what was your true max bid and how many seconds did you set your AS snipe for?

Hi Steve,

Yes, I DID answer your question. I said that "My max price was $157.83 and lag time of 10 sec". I put in my AS max bid at "$157.83" and set it for "10 seconds". Smile
