What brought this outburst on?

Oh, the usual. Watching nit-picking proxy bidders that can't decide the value of an item, but continue to bid more and more because another nit-picking proxy bidder can't decide the value of an item, but continue to bid more and more because another nit-picking proxy bidder can't ...

They'll start off at $50, and go up to $200+, and not consider what they are doing.

Also, I wanted to jump on someone and I knew no one would defend proxy bidders.

Hmmmm...(thinking hard)...proxy bidders, Saddam Hussein, Geraldo Rivera..who else can we think of to pick on who no one will defend?

I agree with your sentiment: "I hate nit-picking proxy bidders!" But I have a question for you, or for anyone else who know the answer: What is a NIT? And why would anyone want to pick them?!

So, in other words, nit-picking, lousy proxy bidders is redundant, and therefore probably not good grammar, right?

A redundancy may be overkill, but it's not necessarily poor grammar. Also, one can only nitpick if one has lice as a precondition, since without lice there can be no nits.

As an additional qualifier: "nit" can also mean the egg of any parasitic insect. "Nit" appears to be an appropriate metaphor for proxy bidders, as snipers seem to view them as parasites and lice.

Aren't lice considered "vermin"?
