1 Person with 3 or 4 Bids at the same time??

No way of knowing the actual motivation for doing it. It might be they are indecisive.

I assume you are talking about a bidder that has multiple high bids placed, versus a "bidding war"?

As far as dealing with 3 or 4 bids - your snipe will only deal with the one highest bid.

Regarding placing multiple bids - when you are the high bidder, and you are at least a full increment above the second highest bidder, you can increase your bid by as little as one cent, and as many times as you want.

You have the correct Idea. No Bidding War, just 1 person listed 3 times as the High Bidder. Are you also saying that If my high bid is $2,801.00 and they Bid $2,800.00 My Bid will be accepted?

As it currently stands, with the price staying at $2,475, if the current high bidder’s bid is $2,800, you could bid $2,800.01 and win, assuming you reached the reserve amount. And right now, a bid of $2,500 would be “accepted”, but not necessarily would it win.

One other thing – looks like this bidder is trying to find what the reserve amount is - that's why he's been placing multiple bids.

Strange one that one, as the item had a Reserve price.....he would of been bidding against the reserve if he had actually UPPED the bid with the two additional bids.

So, it does look like he placed 3 identical bids

Rick, if he was trying to find the reserve...wouldnt the amount increase? I know when I have bid on reserve auctions my proxy has increased the auction amount as I am bidding against the reserve so to speak.

Maybe he is using some sort of bidding software? not a sniper service but like buying manager was?

Anyways....no advantage to what that bidder did. The only other time I have seen something like that (that wasnt just increasing the proxy placed) was when Auction Snipers servers got numerous snipes though

I've seen this happen several time. I think the bidder is placing bids at different prices. Like he might place one bid and later think, "wow, that's not high enough, I'm willing to pay more" so he places a second bid with a higher price, then does it again. Since you can't bid against yourself they all three show at the same price if the price of the item has not yet reached his lowest max bid of the three.

This is from the FAQ’s:
If your snipe doesn’t meet the reserve (and you were the last or highest bidder), eBay will only display the next increment over the previous bidder. They will not display your max.

The key in that quote is, “eBay will only display the next increment over the previous bidder”. That’s what is happening. If this bidder does reach the reserve, then that bid will advance beyond the increment (which is where it's "stuck at") to the reserve amount.

Now X's maximum was $20,000, but Bidder A's max seems to be $16,500 reserve was met at $19,000.

Until the reserve is met, the high bid will show “up to” one increment above the second highest bidder (Bidder A in this example). Once the reserve is met, then the bid history will look like the example you provided.

All of this is predicated on the assumption that I haven't reached my spiked-eggnog intolerance level, which, is probably not a good assumption.

Hate to get involved when Lexie & Rick got a good disagreement going!

Once upon a time, the USA ebay used to show the last maximum bid that was unsuccessful in exceeding the reserve. For the last couple years, that was revised to ONLY show the bid one increment above the second highest bidder, regardless of how many times the top bidder tries to meet the reserve. That is why the top bidder is displayed with multiple bids all at the same amount (all of which are LESS than the reserve). When the reserve is met or the auction ends, the bid history will show that all these bids are increasingly higher. Ummmm....which means I'm agreeing w/Rick...I guess. Sorry Lexie!
